London, M.D. et. al 2020PsycNet child* AND "animal assisted therapy" AND autis*Qualitative study Phenomenology explores how a group interprets their particular experiencesThis study explored the perspectives of parents whose children with ASD participated in five individual occupational therapy sessions involving a trained dog17 parents whose children had participated in animal-assisted occupational therapy sessions involving dogs, were invited to participate in the study. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data,
and an interview schedule was designed specifcally for
this study.
Parents supported the use of animal-assisted therapy involving dogs for their children with ASD. The nonverbal and nonjudgmental characteristics of the dog promoted the child’s engagement, enjoyment, and intrinsic motivation during the therapy sessions. This in turn resulted in gains in the child’s communication, behavioral regulation, interest in new activities and community participation. Future quantitative studies are needed to establish the
efectiveness of AAT in achieving therapy outcomes with
autitic children.
Importance of enjoyment and therapeutic play as a means of supporting intrinsic motivation of the child, while parent refections on the role of motivation in therapeutic achievements indicates that more gains are achieved where a child can be motivated as an active
participant in the therapeutic process.
Study is unique on obtaining parents reflctiion on AAT. There were only 17 participants and it was only focused on the use of dogs. London, M.
