Why this petition matters

Started by Michael Novick

Pacifica is a unique national democratic media institution whose bylaws and non-profit corporate charter give its members -- listener-sponsors and the paid and unpaid staff of its five stations -- a voice in its governance through elected representatives to Local Station Boards for KPFA, KPFK, KPFT, WPFW and WBAI. The Local Station Boards in turn elect members from their ranks to the Pacifica National Board. These democratic rights were won through struggles, boycotts and litigation over a decade ago, but are being attenuated at a moment when they are more necessary than ever, as the domination of corporate media conglomerates and the threat of government surveillance erode the freedom of speech and the press that is vital to human rights, informed community organizing and social responsibility. Despite the requirements of law and the Pacifica bylaws, the interim Executive Director and National Board of Pacifica have been delaying the hire of the necessary personnel and the implementation of procedures to carry out this year's election. Further delay will damage the election process and open the foundation up to the possibility of further costly litigation. The Pacifica iED and PNB need to act promptly to allow the listener and staff members to exercise their democratic right to elect representatives to the Local Station Boards.
