Measles in German region hosting World Cup

Tue Jun 6, 7:51 AM ET

PARIS - French health authorities on Tuesday warned World Cup travelers of a measles outbreak in western Germany.

France's Health Ministry said 1,169 people have been infected with measles in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, most of them children and teenagers.

A ministry statement advised French tourists to make sure they are vaccinated against measles, an airborne virus that is highly contagious and can lead to pneumonia, ear infections and encephalitis, which causes brain swelling and can be deadly in rare cases. The World Cup, which starts Friday, is expected to attract more than 1 million tourists to 12 German cities hosting soccer matches. Several, like Dortmund and Cologne, are in the region affected by the epidemic.
