Are you interested in finding your inner Parisian? Intoxicating Paris: Uncorking the Parisian Within is PJ Adams's quirky journey through the byways, kitchens, shops, cafés, closets, boudoirs, and creative heart of Paris. Intoxicating Paris takes you through the ancient streets of Paris, where you’ll find the secrets of creativity that inspired the likes of Hemingway, Hugo, and Rodin. Readers will peek inside some of the most sumptuous dining venues in Paris. And you’ll join PJ in a few cooking escapades, as well as solve the mystery of how those French women maintain their slim physiques despite their rich diet of foie gras, bread, wine, and dessert! You’ll also learn the sources of the French woman’s allure—how she lives her life, conducts her relationships, and rears her children. You’ll examine the French man’s potent ability to seduce, as well as how La Seduction holds sway in the institutions and French bastions of power. And you'll learn how strict parenting and close ties shape the French extended family system. You'll do a little flânering (wandering) through the marchés of Paris, as well as les grands magasins (department stores). And you'll uncover some ways to put some of that French style into your own closet, no matter your age or budget. Finally, you'll learn how to capture a bit of that French joie de vivre, whether you visit Paris or simply invite her into your living room as an arm chair traveler. This book is for style lovers, foodies, creatives, and anyone who simply loves Paris. Editorial Reviews

Review

"Intoxicating Paris is a personal insight travel guide...a good start for a first-time visitor [but] some sections of the book...were written for me. Because I have lived here [Paris] since 1992, her therapist expertise aided me to understand the cultural differences between the American and French...I liked her sentence, 'Like some kind of cultural time machine, Paris doesn't whisk you between centuries, you step into them when you merely cross the street.' "--Colleen Shaughnessy-Larsson, Colleen's Paris

Nominated for the 2014 American Library in Paris Book Award.

"Summertime and the reading is there for the taking...Intoxicating Paris (by American therapist PJ Adams) is a wandering journey through the City of Light--its kitchens, shops, cafes, closets and most especially its creativity. Racy, insightful, delightful, this is a book for all who love Paris...wondrous..a good read."--
Harvey Frommer, Frommer Luxury Travel

"In a breezy and clever writing style, [PJ Adams] has produced an entertaining memoir-cum-guide to the City of Light...witty, insightful...Nowhere is she more eloquent than when she writes of food. The markets of Paris come alive in her vivid descriptions, and each meal taken in a restaurant brought back some wonderful memories...In the end, what comes across is that this is a witty, intelligent woman with an open mind and strong powers of observation...Best of all, her affection for her subject shines through on every page."--Jane Del Monte,
Bonjour Paris.com

"If you want insight into the French soul and national identity, you must read this book. There are short chapters on everything from dating to school to shopping.
Intoxicating Parisby PJ Adams is worth the read." -Chris Wright, Dana Point Times "Intoxicating Paris is a vivid romp through the byways, kitchens, shops, cafes, closets, and boudoirs of Paris by American therapist PJ Adams. Her tales of love and lingerie, cuisine and creativity, and life as only the French can live it make for an enlightening and fun read."--Tom Leech, author of On the Road in '68

"I really enjoyed this book and think that it is a `must read' for anyone considering a trip to Paris; whether you're a seasoned traveller or new to the Parisian scene. It goes way beyond other travelogues and gives a real insight into the culture of the people of Paris and France...its people and their lifestyle shines through in her engaging and informative writing." Books arrived promptly and I gave them as gifts to my grand kids. Great descriptions of the French, culture, some history, locales. Fun reading. Full of information in so many areas. Highly recommend.

This is a good book written by an experienced author on a subject that has been worked over for many, many years but P J Adams does bring a sort of new dimension to speaking about Paris; It's like taking a walk around town and looking into familiar places with a knowledgeable friend in tow. The book deals with Paris as it is today so it is best to read it right now, maybe just before ones next trip to the wonderful and ever changing city. RDH

I first visited Paris & quite a bit of France about 50 years ago and most recently to Paris in 2011. Intoxicating Paris brings back wonderful memories of my 1st visit and most recent because the author touches on the very essence of France: French Food, Wine, Cheese and Bread! So many wonderful choices and over the years the smells and tastes have not changed. Parisians (the women & men) are like no others when you think about their relationships and how they live as so well detailed in the book...I laughed out loud several times. My next trip will be even more adventurous, rewarding and fun after this great read!

Thanks PJ - when is the next book coming out?

PS - I love the cover; a beautiful woman, champagne & romance imagined!

The book is informative but a bit pedestrian. Also the author did not include Josephine Baker in her chapter on "The French Woman". Nearly every other book I've read on modern France mentions her in terms that at the very least are respectful. Ms. Baker was given two of France's highest honors, and was considered the epitome of the Parisienne; white French women even darkened their skins and marcelled their hair to copy her style. Men committed suicide over her. She was worshipped by the French- not all of them, but most, and thousands came to her funeral. The author chose not to give Baker her due...how American. It's because of attitudes like the author's that Baker stayed in Paris. Fail.

Not what I expected... didn't finish reading it.

If you're a world traveler, you know there are some people who just make great travel companions. They point out the quirky fellow over in the corner by the famous statuary; they make you laugh when things go strangely awry; they come up with fascinating facts about your coffee or the cobblestones (not to mention the current President, or a movie star, or the Mona Lisa!); they bring out the adventurer in you even when your feet are tired! Pamela Adams is clearly one of those treasured folks and, reading her travel memoir, you'll have had her at your side on the trip of a lifetime as, together, you stalk those gorgeous Parisians in their shops, museums and cafes, in search of your own joie de vivre! Bon Voyage!

Book has a lot of good facts and details about the French lifestyle along with some useful tips that help trip planning. I definitely recommend it.

This is one of the more illuminating books on Paris and France that I have read. This is not a travel guide. It's a travelogue that describes the experience of visiting Paris. Her approach organizes the book into discussions of the French psyche and lifestyle. Just look at the chapter titles: Femininity ...Verve... Willpower ...Sociability... and more. It will either prepare you for the Parisian experience or it will remind you of why you want to return. In effect, she does exactly what she states in the first chapter i.e. "It's about negotiating life in Paris,..."

This is quite possibly one of the worst books written. It's so bad its entertaining to start with. The film references are abundant and very unnecessary. Apparently Americans boycotted french fries when the US invaded Iraq?! Err have you seen the obesity in the US - I don't think so. Oh and the real gem Americans feel abused and mistreated if French don't speak English! How about learning to speak a few curtsey words like please, thank you when visiting a country? The writer then goes on to add a basic french for dummies section. How she tried to bridge the communication boundries. If you need to spell it out to people to learn please and thank you when they travel, quite frankly they should not be given a passport. Did I mention the frequent movie references as if this is the only way explain a point is to make a reference to hollywood's vision of Paris and French culture. Now half way through its gone from mildly amusing to just plain insulting. The stereotypes and generalisations are abundant if anything my dislike for Americans has just trebled. If you are well travelled and have half a brain keep well away from this utter tripe.
