Hello Vortex:wave:

My name is Tim, I do not own a Passat, instead I own a 2005 1.8t GTI with a Jetta front end, painted in the greatest color VW has ever produced, Silverstone Grey. This thread consists of very little progress, mostly just chit chat between myself and a few other members who have nothing better to do at work and school. If you wish to read this, there definitely is interesting information in here, and a lot of talk/purchasing of rare parts.

This leads to the description of my build. . . Which you will get after a little backstory :p My last car was a very 17 year old approach to a GTI. Take that how you will. However I learned a lot through it and it inspired a lot in my life, so if you talk **** about it I will cut your throat :)

I am 19 years old, and a Mechanical Engineering major with a Mechatronics minor at Villanova University. This GTI was bought as an absolute heaping piece, but it was what my broke college ass could afford. It runs, decently enough I suppose, but the body was in bad shape, and it was not maintained very well at all. Since I bought it in October of 2013 I have been steadily purchasing a lot of quality parts, mostly aesthetic pieces, since it isn't being driven right now, I am trying to stock pile those so that I can do the necessary maintenance then have all the parts I need already in my possession to make it mine. All of these aesthetic pieces are OEM or rare aftermarket pieces. Many would say that this is what is referred to as being OEM+, which is exactly my goal. This car will be maintained with nothing short of the best quality parts. The devil is truly in the details;)

To give credit where credit is due, I have received a lot of inspiration and help along the way from these people:

Also I'm gonna owe a lot to Carl and his roommate for helping me with my shaved bay

Though its a long shot, I would still love to know who on here owned this car circa 2008 :)

theyre not r bumpers:rolleyes: the front is shaved and molded, the back is just shaved

theres a more head on picture of the front, ill put up some more when im actually near my car:laugh:

Gooood luck with that haha, Ebay is your best bet for most of them if you cant find them at the junkers. And I noticed that most of the time the OEM P/N on like 1stvwparts for black parts comes up the cheapest, For example the little seatbelt slides and trim on the B pillers were like 5$ OEM black and new from there :D
thats because 1stvwparts is awesome:thumbup:

you bought that car off a kid named anthony in bayonne? he has not a clue about anything except drugs, kid sucks and sorry to inform you but do major maintenance on the car because he beat the ish out of it. Its true that he didnt change a thing

#16 ·
no idea... just a kid in my town that tried to be friends with me because of the car... i went to highschool with him but i knew what he was all about and i knew he just bought the car because he wanted to be cool.

havent seen him or the car in over a year but i do know that he drove that car pretty hard and rather spend his money on other things... good to see its in good hands.

i almost bought his boser till i saw how jacked it was he wanted to sell it to me for $100 lol

#17 ·
yeah im pretty pissed how rough the boser is:banghead: but i again, i practically stole it off him haha i have a great guy that does some of the most amazing body work ive ever seen, so itll all get fixed up nicely:thumbup:

#20 ·
Gonna keep it simple, probably gonna try to fix the shave job, its some really nice bodywork that has just gone to sh*t unfortunately because it was a city car

welcome, good luck with the car :beer:
thank you:beer:

#21 ·
well even though im at school it hasnt stopped me from ordering parts:thumbup: my wood trim will get shipped out tomorrow:laugh: im still searching for a knob thats in decent shape if anyone has one though:thumbup:

#27 ·
You know what sucks after looking at your car again it reminds me I found a PG hatch in my local junkyard this weekend PERFECT half shaved with no VW symbol I bet they only wanted like 50$ for it to haha... I would have picked it up in a heartbeat if I had a hatch XD

I worked at Burger King for a bit about a year ago and this car would come through the drive thru every now and then. It was for sale back then too, although I remember the bumpers being in better shape and maybe different wheels? Just thought it was funny seeing it on here, good luck with the build! :beer:

#38 ·
got my wood trim pieces in:thumbup: notice the freaking sticker though:facepalm: that should be fun to get off haha

on a side note, both handles have lovely cracks in em, so i was wondering if someone(specifically someone already in this thread:rolleyes:) might be able to point out a good way to refinish them with a material that would seal the cracks, although leave them visible to give somewhat of a stressed look, just thinking it might be a cool way to make use out of something:thumbup:

P.S. 1000TH POST MUDDAFUCKASSS:wave:

Noone cares about your 1000 post you butthole :p

Congrats and congrats again for getting your hands on some Myrtle wood trim! Your best bet to refinish them would be to sand off the topcoat down to the wood and jut restain them. Although let me warn you i have had terrible luck restaining / coating these things as there seems to be a oil contamanant in the wood that prevents the clearcoat or whatever from drying properly. Hence i am just going raw polished wood on my build like my shift knob. You could try to get some clear resin or somthing in the crack but its not going to be easy.

Again nice find I have 3 sets of the stuff now :cool:

Also dont be afraid to sand the trim pieces with like a 1000-2000 grit paper to get all the scratches out. after you sand it you can easily buff it with a blue compound loose cloth wheel (Lower the RPM the better) to give it a Realllly glossy glass finish :thumbup:

#40 ·
okay i got ya, my step dad is a carpenter so i have a ludicrous number of different stains/ polishes/ resins i can get my hands on. ill get some practice on they piece i grabbed at the junkyard off a passat so i dont f*ck this one up:laugh:

#43 · (Edited)
i dont believe i ever said my last car was perfect bud:rolleyes: i doubt yours was either haha but youre damn straight im gonna polish the intake mani

wood trim will look classy:thumbup::beer:
thanks man:wave:
the handles are rough so hopefully i can find a pair in better shape, but im really trying to get oem+ going on this haha mostly because engine stuff is so much work:laugh:

update incase anyone cares: not really anything haha school with no car rocks:thumbup: not really though, but im trying to grab a homelink visor, find better myrtle wood, also researching best way to wrap the headliner. many thanks to einkaufswagen

Holy poppy body work...:facepalm:

Glad to see it in good hands and someone who has good intentions. Personally not a fan of shaved bumper, but to each their own:thumbup:

excited to see whats in store for it:wave::popcorn:

#48 ·
tell me about it:facepalm: im sure it was good 70xxx miles ago when it was done but the last guy lived in the city so thats asking for trouble:laugh: im gonna probably try to get rid of the shaved bumpers, i can respect the work it takes to do it, but it doesnt look good on this car hhaha. thanks:wave::beer:

That silverstone JTI tho. You dont see many of those.. :heart: Good luck getting it back to tip top shape. :beer:
silverstone is mah favorite:heart::heart: thanks:beer:

mothers polish may do alot of good here. Lets not forget, it is not limited to aluminum. :p
might have to try that:beer: hopefully i can get the stickers off without destroying it too much

Yeap one way to go about it :thumbup: Actuly headlight restortion paste would probrably work just as well any fine abrasive grit will work probrably.
always with the helpful suggestions:wave: im at school for another week and a half, then hopefully i can get the interior sorted, clean the engine bay a little then over winter break i need a timing belt

alllllll kinddddssssss of fun:laugh::laugh:
