Now you don't have to worry whether somebody has slipped roofies into your drink. A group of engineers have founded DrinkSavvy, a company that makes cups and straws that change color in the presence of common date-rape drugs GHB, Rohypnol, and Ketamine.
It's far too common for people to be unwittingly drugged at a bar or club when somebody slips these odorless, colorless date-rape drugs into their drinks. People who have been dosed generally experience blackouts and are easily victimized. That's what happened to engineering student Michael Abramson. Out with friends, he was roofied — and he never wanted it to happen to him or anyone else again. So he used science to solve the problem.
He enlisted the aid of two professors to create the DrinkSavvy cups and straws, and successfully raised $50 thousand on Kickstarter to make the product happen. When GHB, Ketamine, or Rohypnol touch the surface of the products, they turn a vibrant red, alerting you to the presence of the date-rape drugs.
According to The Verge:
The company hopes to offer an expanded line of products to the public sometime in 2014. Rape crisis centers will have free access to the glassware, and DrinkSavvy is hoping that colleges will make its technology a central part of their rape prevention initiatives.
Veronica Mars will probably be carrying a dozen of these straws in her camera bag for the rest of her life, and so should you.
