Fans of Ally Carter's Heist Society novels will love this teen mystery/thriller with sarcastic wit, a hint of romance, and Ocean’s Eleven–inspired action.

Julep Dupree tells lies. A lot of them. She’s a con artist, a master of disguise, and a sophomore at Chicago’s swanky St. Agatha High, where her father, an old-school grifter with a weakness for the ponies, sends her to so she can learn to mingle with the upper crust. For extra spending money Julep doesn’t rely on her dad—she runs petty scams for her classmates while dodging the dean of students and maintaining an A+ (okay, A-) average.

But when she comes home one day to a ransacked apartment and her father gone, Julep’s carefully laid plans for an expenses-paid golden ticket to Yale start to unravel. Even with help from St. Agatha’s resident Prince Charming, Tyler Richland, and her loyal hacker sidekick, Sam, Julep struggles to trace her dad’s trail of clues through a maze of creepy stalkers, hit attempts, family secrets, and worse, the threat of foster care. With everything she has at stake, Julep’s in way over her head . . . but that’s not going to stop her from using every trick in the book to find her dad before his mark finds her. Because that would be criminal.

"Julep isn't just another high schooler beset by the usual drama of boys and academia. Nope—she also happens to be a con artist and master of disguise, which comes in mighty handy when her father mysteriously disappears. Determined, she delves into the underbelly of Chicago to find him (bringing a bunch of fresh plot lines and
unexpected twists along the way)."--teenVogue.com

"Summer creates a standout character in Julep. She lies and cheats with so much confidence and skill that readers will cheer her on, but she also adheres to her own strict moral code. . . .
A memorable debut; here's hoping for a lot more from Summer."—Kirkus Reviews

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Julep Dupree is a liar. Trained by her father in the family grifting business, she is adept at trading lies for money to pay the bills. Good thing, too, because the tuition for St. Agatha's High School is high. Julep isn't alarmed when she returns home one evening to find that her father missing, but the tousled state of the apartment leaves her with a hollow feeling and sets her on a chase to find him and the "mark" that perpetrated the ransacking. Best friend Sam is worried for her, but the teen pushes off his concern, even as she begins to get unusual and convenient attention from the class heartthrob, Tyler Richland. Together, the three high school students work to discover answers to all of Julep's questions, a mission that will prove deadly for one of them. Summer has penned a debut novel chronicling the life of a teenage grifter that is outrageous and believable. In Julep, the author explores a young female character who must call into question the actions of all those with whom she has contact, drawing upon inner strength to fortify her, even in the face of mortal danger. Summer's characters are well developed and leave readers looking forward to the next installment in this series.—Colleen S. Banick, Westport Public Schools, CT

Julep Dupree is a grifter. The one thing you really need to know about her is that Julep Dupree is not her real name. The reader actually doesn’t ever find out her real name unless you figure out the clues that Mary Elizabeth Summer leaves for you. Julep Dupree is a con-artist and she comes from a family of con-artists. This is the life that Julep has known all of her life. Julep really wants to make something of herself. She goes to a fancy school for rich kids in order to earn a good education so she can go to college. Then her dad goes missing and now she needs to find him.

I love Julep’s character. I think there is so much too her. I love the mystery that is presented to the reader. The reader gets to follow Julep in her search for her dad or what could have happened to her dad. I was pulled into this story right away and was completely hooked. I love it so much. I thin all the characters were great. I wanted to throw the book at Summer a few times because of incidents that happened.

Summer really shows how great of a writer she is, with this novel. For a debut novel she did a fantastic job. I would put her name up their with Ally Carter who does great mystery/ puzzle solving novels. I would keep coming back for more of Julep and her gang of friends. I feel like Julep learned a lot in this first novel and I am completely ready to dive into the second one. This was a page turner and I am looking forward to the second one being another page turner.

Even though Julep is pretty much a juvenile criminal she is such a lovable character because she is so smart and creative. She really puts a lot of thought into the work that she does and she wants to help other accomplish things too. I love that Julep has goals for her life. I really love this main character and I think others will too!

This book was great. I liked how you got to see the story from a different point of view. You got to see it from the point of view of the criminal. Julep was a great character. I absolutely loved her. The story has a nice little twist. The ending is a little sad to me. She loses so much in the end. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story with action, whit, great characters, and a little bit of romance.

Julep Dupree is a grifter — a con artist and master of disguise for hire by her fellow students at St. Agatha’s private school. Her cons finance her swanky education, which she thinks she needs to get into Yale and pursue a career that doesn’t involve conning. Her father, her only family, taught her everything he knows, but when he disappears, Julep fears being sent to some horrible foster home. Unable to alert police of his disappearance, Julep hunts for the clues her father left behind, hoping to solve his riddles and discover his whereabouts — or the truth of his demise.

Trust Me, I'm Lying is just plain FUN. Julep’s is voice leaps off the page — she’s witty, snarky, and downright hilarious, and her voice never falls flat throughout the novel. It’s also fun to read about the cons Julep performs for the students who hire her — you’re really getting an inside look at how grifters fool their marks.

It’s also an action-packed page turner. There are no slow parts to this book — I read the whole thing in a day. There are twists and turns to keep you guessing, and characters’ whose motivations will surprise you (but not in the obnoxious “wait, what?” way). The plot is tightly woven and fast-paced, and you won’t want to put it down.

I’ve read so many contemporary YA books lately that follow the same premise — this one’s really unique, and a real breath of fresh air. I’ve already read several books since, and this one was one of the most memorable of the pack.

    - Great pacing and flow, not a dull moment
    - An entertaining storyline with elements of excitement and action
    - A quick, fun, light-mystery read

    Cons
    - Occurrences were a little unbelievable or too easily solved and managed at times
    - Julep's reactions and emotions were often distant when an emotional side of her could've been explored

    - The dark issue presented in the storyline played a too shallow part to feel important or necessary
    - Scenes that should've been huge, significant, and dramatic fluttered by like any other and ended up unmemorable

Julep is a teen con artist who attends an elite school by earning good money while helping her fellow students get what they want. When she completes a charade for a client, she returns home to find her apartment torn apart and her dad missing. The only clue she finds is an envelope containing a note and a gun. The enigmatic note says, “Beware the field of miracles”. Her best friend and extremely helpful assistant, Sam, helps Julep piece clues together and when someone puts a dead rat in her locker, she gains another ally in the form of a popular schoolmate, Tyler. The search for her father becomes more dangerous by the day. Someone runs her off the road when she’s with Sam, she’s in an explosion and she discovers a human trafficking site. I enjoyed Julep’s intelligence and ability to plan ahead and improvise when needed. I also enjoyed the mysteries surrounding her plans and waiting to discover what those plans were as I read. A fun mystery that’s also full of danger and intensity, 5 stars!
