My life beyond Google
Here's how I use the web for internet research
1. Hidden Web
All sources that are not in Google. Either they are blocked via robots.txt, too big to be indexed (= other databases), sources that are technically not accessible, dynamically generated content or content that changes very fast. I use a strategy to find this content by predicting the homepage. For example, if I need to know who is the owner of company X in New Zealand, I just visualise a search engine and predict what must be on the screen. In this case:
the word search (button)
companies / company
New Zealand
So I type
search companies new zealand
If I forgot what the name of the website was where you can search for planes that are in the air, I visualise the search engine with:
"Enter flight number"
And what are the three biggest databases for patents? Just predict the homepage with:
search patents
If you forget the word search, it won't work that good.
2. Lost web
Over 400 billion sources that are not available in Google because they page is gone: "Error 404" or "Page not Found" can be found back in archive.org
3. Social Media
I use Topsy.com to research Twitter
I use Facebook Graph to research Graph
I use Google to research LinkedIn, f.e:
"fracturing industry" AROUND (4) 2014 site:linkedin.com
4. Google
I don't use Google to ask questions, but to predict an answer. If I want to know why the dinosaurs died, I type
"dinosaurs died because"
because for every WHY question, the answer must contain because or similar words.
