Two men and two women were in custody Wednesday morning after state troopers in Eagle County pursued a vehicle reported stolen at gunpoint in Denver.

The incident began at about 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 70 when a trooper spotted a driver making an unsafe lane change in a vehicle with an “obscured” license plate, said Trooper Josh Lewis, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman.

The trooper reported the incident and received information that the vehicle, a 2006 Chrysler 300, was “carjacked from Denver at gunpoint a couple of days ago,” Lewis said.

The trooper tried to stop the car, but the driver took off instead, Lewis said.

Stop sticks were laid out on the highway in advance of the fleeing car, and the maneuver worked, bringing the Chrysler to a stop.

A man got out of the car and ran off on foot, but pursuing officers corralled him a short time later after the suspect “went into some water,” Lewis said.

The other three people remained in the car after it came to a stop.

All four are in custody in Eagle County, Lewis said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
