We entered the Nokia Mobile Data Challenge (research.nokia.com/mdc). The challenge was to analyse aspects of smartphone logs for 38 participants, over the course of a year. We derived social network information from these and wanted to study how these are embedded in time and space and why. We designed, implemented and used a visual analytics tool to characterise spatial and temporal aspects of participants' social networks.
This work was awarded third prize in the Open Challenge category. This video demonstrates the tool and explains how we used it. Full details can be found at openaccess.city.ac.uk/2530/
Note: The original data (as supplied to us) had the genders of participants inadvertently switched. This has been corrected in our paper, but not in our video. (As it happens, it makes very little difference to our findings).
