Sodium hexametaphosphate (actually better described chemically as sodium polyphosphate) is also known as "Graham's Salt" or CALGON. The material bought is a nice free-flowing white powder which works well for my application of complexing metals like calcium. It is hygroscopic, sucking water readily from the air and then caking up, and it would be helpful if this information was included on the label: keep tight shut to exclude moisture! Good stuff.

I bought this for cleaning green verdigris off of some old Bronze Age axes which I found. A solution of this in heated water works a treat removing all remaining verdigris
