Calling all artists! CAT seeks artists for Art in the Park, deadline April 15

On June 6 and 7, local artists have the opportunity to be part of a juried art fair without leaving the city limits. Art in the Park, presented by Community Arts of Tecumseh (CAT), is in its third year at Smith Recreation Center. The deadline for artists to submit their application for a booth at Art in the Park is Wednesday, April 15. Applications are online at www.tecumseharts.org.The unique Tecumseh art fair is supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) mini-grant program, administered by the Arts Alliance. Art in the Park is one of two yearly fundraisers, along with Music Fest, CAT uses to offer classes for area children and adults in all aspects of the arts.“Art in the Park is a great addition to the weekend of activities in Tecumseh with Promenade Tecumseh,” said Anne Flora, chairperson for the art fair. “We are excited to have the support of the MCACA, allowing us to offer this event featuring area artists, the chance to see some examples of CAT classes, as well as meeting members of our board.”The juried art fair focuses on many different artistic media. Artist demos and children’s activities are also part of the day.“We select a wide range of art, including painting, watercolor, book art, ceramics, printmaking, collage, sculpture, glass making, mosaics, fiber and woodworking,” said CAT Executive Director Diane Savoia. “We have the support of so many local organizations, especially the City of Tecumseh.”Those interested in having a booth at Art in the Park can apply online. There is an artist application, prospectus, and artists must provide photos of their work as part of the application. For those with little or no experience displaying and selling their artwork, Art in the Park is designed for personal interaction and support. “This community really has a large number of artists living here who haven’t been able to showcase their work in a juried art fair,” Savoia said. “CAT and our volunteers are a hands-on supportive organization, which ensures artists can focus on their art and interacting with the public. We take care of the logistics. For a first-time artist, what a perfect environment.”Artists provide their own tent, which can be staked. CAT provides free parking, overnight security, booth sitters, an air conditioned lounge with an indoor restroom, as well as enthusiastic volunteers. “We have the logistics of a beautiful park setting, too,” said Savoia. “We hear consistently how high the quality of the event has been for past participants. Art in the Park is a serious art fair, not a craft show.”It is a perfect fundraising event for CAT. Artists help make art education possible in the community.“Proceeds from Art in the Park allow CAT the opportunity to provide our community access to art and cultural programs,” Savoia said. “We are able to expose children and adults to all facets of the arts.”The entry fee for artists is $25 and the booth fee for a 10-foot by 10-foot booth is $100.
