Vacant: (An Empathy Novella) (Empathy Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 301 ratings

Book 3 in the bestselling Empathy series.

When two dark souls connect, the draw is too dominant to ignore, and the obsession of owning the only color to brighten my dark world is too unrelenting not to obey.

The depraved devil that is me now had an anchor, someone to venture into the black abyss with.

Normal wasn’t a path ever set for Cereus.

She was her Father’s daughter but my soul mate, even if I disputed ever owning one.

She was struggling without me, the vacant ache inside her leaking out.

It’s calling to me.

The need is too strong, and like with all of my urges, I will embrace it.

My only grumble is..... it wasn't long enough!!!

Ker's writing sings to the darker side of my soul, especially when it comes to Blake, Melody, Ryan and Cereus. I adore her dark depraved world and where she takes us readers with each visit!! Let me tell you this is no different!

Although not nearly long enough for my liking boy does Vacant pack one hell of a punch. I love the world that Ryan lives in and Cereus inhabits more frequently. The connection they have is intense and full of so many feelings neither truly understand but embrace completely. I love the journey that both of them take and how every step they take ultimately leads them back to each other .

Ryan and Blake sealed themselves in my heart from the very first installment of this series and with each book since my love for them has grown stronger, as with Ker's writing! Vacant is amazingly written and I love the fact that although you know something is just around the corner you never quite see what is going to happen. I love everything that this story contains and how it progresses, I couldn't put it down and read it all in one sitting.

sick, twisted, will they won't they?! Come on this story is crazy but I love the series and love how Ker Dukey actually ensures the reader moves on with ALL the characters - you still get to know their individual stories and main characters in a previous book do not simply become side characters. Ker you are amazing!

My one grumble is...I want more and the book is too short!

If you thought Ryan blew your mind ,let me warn you - you ain't seen nothing yet. How Ker Dukey comes up with these stories is amazing.
Ryan told her "Don't forget about me" - well Cereus takes that to a whole new level and meaning. I thought at one point , I actually knew what was happening but that got blown out the water literally !!
In Empathy you see Ryan embracing his darkside and in Desolate we have Blake fighting it, now we have Cereus learning to live with it's pull on her.
Nothing is what it seems throughout the book and although I guessed a couple of things that happened, there were still plenty of surprises.
I was so impressed with Ryans devotion to her and keeping his promise to be there for her, that it was really difficult not to like him now.
He even started to make me laugh a few times and how easily he slips into his killing ways.
I did feel sorry for Blake and Melody at the end but it was for the best.
If you love this series ,then this is a must read.

This is the 3rd book in the Empathy series. To understand this book the other two must be read. I love Ker Dukey's work, for me this series is my favourite. Her work it's amazing and this book didn't disappoint. It's dark, bloody and plays with your mind, her books shock, and I love that about them. I can only hope that we get more of Ryan, because this cannot be the end. It's way too good to finish at this stage. The sign of the brilliance of this author is the testimony of her books. Long may her sick mind live on !!!!

Vacant (An Empathy Novella) by Ker Dukey

Dark and dangerous, that what Ryan and Cereus are. I most certainly would not like to meet these two in a dark alley or in fact in broad daylight in the middle of the street.

Both these characters are completely f###ed up in the head but we knew that just from reading Empathy and Desolate.

Cereus intrigues me, her character has really developed and is more insightful in Vacant.

I loved every bloody minute of this story and I'm so looking forward to Deadly to see what f###ed upness Ker Dukey is gonna give us.

If you like a dark intriguing read this series is the one to read.

Whilst this like the others in the series are well written, this couldn't have been further from where I wanted the story to go and guess that makes me a saint and not a sinner! Too dark for me but a worthy read.

I loved this book don't get me wrong..... I LOVE Ryan and only Ker could make you fall in love with a dark and twisted soul like him and Cereus is just as dark but I just felt that the ending lacked something...... there was so many possibilities that could have played out but it was just left with a bland one that left me wanting to write my own ending :/

Wow! Great book and a good ending to Ryan, Cereus, Blake and Melody's stories. I know Ryan is sick, and a dark and twisted killer. But I can't help but like him. He's certainly a character you should dislike, but the way he cares for Cereus and his thoughts you get to see in his POV somehow make me like him.

This book is set mainly around Cereus and her college life, with Ryan in the Shadows. Until something happens.

I have loved every one of these books and will definitely be reading more from this author.

I very rarely read novellas because of the short length and almost never read .5 books because they seem like they're just retelling a story I already know but... I couldn't resist "Vacant" and am so glad I gave it a chance! I loved "Empathy" and "Desolate" so was hoping the story would continue and this book didn't let me down! Ryan has got to be one of the most interesting book characters I've ever read and was glad he showed up alive and kicking. He's a twisted psychopath but for some reason I like him and am always rooting for him. The evolution of Cereus is fascinating - seeing her come to terms with the darkness inside her and embrace it is really interesting. There so much more to tell about Cereus and Ryan that I'm hopeful the author has #3 in the works!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars and while their union may not be a good one in the traditional sense
Reviewed in the United States on 31 January 2017
Vacant begins with Cereus Braxton trying to pick up the pieces after Ryan walked out of her life. Knowing their bond is immeasurable, Ryan’s voice pervades her mind providing peace within her dark thoughts. With Cereus always knowing she was a different than most, her urges are starting to surface, and more than ever, Cereus wishes Ryan would return for her.

Meanwhile, Ryan is trying to keep himself pre-occupied with a diversion, but despite not having direct contact with his Cereus, he maintains a close eye on her. Seeing Cereus struggle with her desires amongst is challenging for Ryan and he badly wants to bring her into his world.

When a series of events occur on Cereus’ college campus, it starts to draw the wrong kind of attention alerting ever-watchful eyes to the scene. There are only two other people who know the truth but will either be successful in preventing the inevitable?

With the focus on how Cereus tries to reconcile her feelings, it gives us a glimpse into her inner turmoil. When she reaches the point where she no longer wants to be alone, she accepts what lies within, but there is still so much more that Cereus must learn to embrace. Existing on the periphery is no longer an option for her.

Learning more about Ryan and how he likes to play with his prey was quite intriguing. With Ryan, his absolute belief in his own superiority is part of his charm and also underscores the deep and disturbing level of his psychosis.

In this novella, we see how certain bonds can be truly magnetic, and while their union may not be a good one in the traditional sense, sometimes you don’t have to be alone in the darkness.

I recommend this book to readers who want to continue to delve into the debauched world of those who live in the shadows; a place where sinners are exceptional and normalcy are for the lesser.

Have you ever read a book and your thinking to yourself 'I can't like this book' or 'what's wrong with me to actually like this' well this was me all throughout Vacant. It was the perfect story to end the most epic series I've read! Although I could keep reading these characters throughout there lif. The journey cereus and Ryan went on was amazing! I'm glad they ended up finding their way back to each other because reading their feelings and what was going on in both minds, you could see how much Ryan impacted Cereus and how much she needed him. I love Cereus! I love how wicked she was and how much alike she is to Ryan because although Ryan did was horrible stuff I couldn't help but feel for him and enjoy the ride he took us on and how much he has grown towards Blake and Mel

5 STARS!!! Holy Hell for the Love of RYAN!!!
Vacant an Empathy series novella is *Riveting & Chilling (in a good way)* and just as Raw Dark and Intense like the rest of the Empathy series. Vacant continues where Desolate ended and just when you thought things were settled... New twists and WTF moments pop up that just blow your mind. Have you ever read something and think to yourself “I shouldn't like this”, “there has to be something wrong with me because I LOVE what I am reading. That is the best way for me to describe how I felt reading Vacant. I loved it! I honestly loved EVERY SINGLE TWISTED ASPECT of this story, and Ryan who may be a complex character but you can't help but just feel for him! Ker Dukey knows how to write original stories that will leave you speechless and amazed!

Wow!!! What a crazy roller coaster for my mind. I thought this might be a little rough to get into because of Ryan and Cereus' relationship. I had to read this because I read the first two stories. Just be prepared to have your mind blown on this one.
