To some, kindness is a virtue. For others, like our ever-loyal canine companions, it may be pure instinct.

Following a recent wildfire that ravaged parts of Idaho, landowner Louis Armstrong had returned to his property to assess the damage when he encountered a remarkable scene of love and dedication amidst the devastation. There, alongside the body of a fawn who had sadly perished in the blaze, Armstrong spotted his neighbor's three dogs seeming to hold vigil for the fallen baby.

"They were definitely trying to protect it," he told news station KBOI. "I thought it was pretty amazing."

The dogs' touching gesture toward the dead fawn was not short-lived. Armstrong says that when he passed by the area again later that day, the dogs had not budged from the spot.

It's impossible to say for certain what had driven the dogs to stand guard alongside the deceased deer for so long, but such displays of compassion are nothing new. Dogs have long shown an incredible capacity to extend their empathy to creatures unlike themselves - offering lessons on faithfulness and love that humanity would be wise to learn from.
