Egypt president sacks interior minister, names successor

Egypt's dismissed interior minister, Mohamed Ibrahim

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has sacked the country’s Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, introducing Magdi Abdel Ghaffar as his successor.

Major General Magdi Abdel-Ghaffar is a leading figure in the national security apparatus and has served as director of the National Security Agency, a subsidiary department at Egypt’s Interior Ministry.

Ibrahim has been appointed security advisor to the prime minister.

The move is part of a cabinet reshuffle that comprises eight ministries, among them the ministries of education, agriculture, health, tourism and culture.

The other new ministers are Salah El-Din Helal for agriculture, Abdel-Wahed El-Nabawi for culture, Moheb El-Rafie for education, Hala Mohamed Youssef for housing, Khaled Ali Negm for communications, Khaled Abbas Rami for tourism and Mohamed Ahmed Yousef for technical education and training.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab confirmed the reshuffle during a press conference for an upcoming economic conference. He said the eight new ministers had been sworn in earlier on Thursday.

Ibrahim, who was originally appointed during a cabinet reshuffle in January 2013, and has been massively criticized for having a major role in Egypt’s heavy-handed crackdown on the opposition.

The controversial figure was one of the few ministers who kept his portfolio after Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, was ousted in July 2013.

Rights advocates and opposition groups have been calling for Ibrahim’s dismissal since January 2015 when the leftists activist,  Shaimaa Sabbagh, was killed by security forces.

Egypt has seen regular demonstrations by followers of Morsi, with activists describing the rise of the military-backed Sisi as a coup.
