- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 February 2014Southampton has a history of barbarity, sickness, pirates and other disasters. The stories of these events take the reader from 837 to 1944 D-Day when the onslaught against the Germans started. Southampton played a crucial part in that event. Throughout 1100 years the town was under assault from a great variety of attacks. World War II was the final bout in its history
Thd Danes, followed by the Normans played havoc with the town and its inhabitants. Plagues, leprosy and the 'black death', are written in some detail giving a vivid idea of what people suffered. As a port Southampton was in line for health hazards brought in by ships as well as marauding armies and armadas. Kings and politics conntributed to the tide of difficulties for the people of this town which had been important for so many centuries. The tide of attacks had turned by the 18th century but there was still plenty of sickness, murder and other disasters.
The book is a delight for people who are keen to know how Southampton, placed right in the middle of the south coast, has survived so many devastating events. Penny Legg's writing and excellent research has created a history of these events from a perspective of those times. Todoay it is a monument to the resilience of the generations who have played their part in developing what is now a thriving port and a major commerical centre.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good, more history needed in areas.
Would have liked more on the start of the Hundred Years' War and sacking of southern english ports. For such a large part of its history and effect on the area, it seems to briefly gloss over this episode.
