- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2013While I don't normally pick up DIY books, I figured that having one for around the house might come in handy at some point. I don't consider myself particularly handy, but this book makes it much easier to grasp the concepts of home improvement. Rating projects from easy to hard, this book goes through each different type of project. Beginning with replacing an electrical outlet or faucet, all the way to installing a drop celling, there is something for every skill level, including my very beginning level. The only thing I wish if had included was more pictures of the actual process in the book itself. Sometimes it's hard for me to picture exactly what I'm supposed to be doing without a picture to guide me. Other than that, the book goes through and addresses almost every aspect, including approximate costs, ideas, tools needed, and skill levels. I would recommend this book to someone wanting more information about DIY home improvement.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2013This book offers a variety of advice that will allow you to renovate your home safely and easily. The chapters are organized so you can easily reference the project or room you’re trying to renovate. I normally struggle to follow instructions, but the projects are explained very well so they were easy to follow. There are difficulty levels for each job, which makes it simple for you to pick which projects you can do, whether it’s installing windows or replacing your faucet. I like that this book doesn't make you go above your comfort zone and doesn't make you feel bad for having to call for professional help.
There are a multitude of tips that help you understand how to do the job best. Even someone who hasn’t done a single home renovation can accomplish something due to this book. After reading this book, you should have no problems renovating your house, which will save you a ton of money!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2013I have long mourned my general lack of usefulness around the house. When I picked up Gary Nealon's You Can Do It Yourself self-help book, I expected to learn how to recognize when something is wrong (so I can call someone to deal with it for me) at most. I was pleasantly surprised.
In this book, you will find a simple guide to a number of vital home-improvement projects. From mounting a flat-screen TV to laying in new floors, step-by-step instructions make the task easy and lend confidence to the reader. I was impressed by Nealon's thoroughness: every project is rated by its potential difficulty, lists necessary supplies, and includes clear descriptions of the tasks to be performed.
Successful home improvement entails more than the purchase of equipment. Nealon discusses important issues such as monetary and time budgeting, realistic expectations, and even subcontracting more demanding projects. I was surprised to learn that many out-of-the-box furniture and "bargain" equipment bundles are actually substandard - ease apparently does not equal value. Nealon also spends some time familiarizing readers with vital components of their households; tips in dealing with electrical black-outs were of particular value to me, as such can occur without much warning.
All in all, I found the book immensely helpful!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2013Picked this up as a resource to have as we just bought a fixer-upper. Addresses several projects, but never gets too far into detail on them. I would probably re-name it You Can Do It Yourself from 30,000 Feet. But it was $3. I can't complain too much. I have definitely learned more than my investment!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2013The information is presented clearly in an easy-to-follow format. I like that Gary Nealon first addresses any DIY-beginner's concern: how to stay within your home improvement budget. The projects in the book have a huge range so you're bound to find something you've been wanting to try or something that you didn't know you've been wanting to try: "How to Tape & Mud Drywall," "How to Hang a Door," and "Preparation for Laying a New Floor," to name a few. There's an extensive list of projects one can do, so much so that it's a little mind boggling how many fix-its I could have done myself. No need to call the handyman, I can fix this leaky faucet with a few materials from my house and a quick trip to Home Depot or Lowes. The most helpful part of the book was the bonus section in which Nealon provides you with a maintenance checklist any homeowner can go through, and it's usefully organized by seasons because different weather conditions require extra attention. This is a book I will keep on a shelf and return to again and again whenever I want to start a project or save some money.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2013I have done a fair amount of DIY projects & house maintenance over the years, but the truth of the matter is, I'm no pro. I always research before I start, and I thought this book would be helpful and a good addition to my DIY library. Alas, No on both counts.
I am stunned by the 4+-star reviews this book has received. It is wholly devoid of any illustrations and the "step-by-step" instructions are so sketchy as to be laughable.
My other problems with this guide are 1) instances of poor grammar and 2) typos and spelling errors. It's just sloppy, and suggests a lack of attention to detail. And detail is what this book lacks!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2014I found this book will be with me for a very long time. Written in plain
simple form, it will help out the new homeowner and the old homeowner.
It did make me realize that I have age limitations but that there is still
alot that I can do around my own home. I would suggest this book
for people that want to do a repair but has no idea how to get started.
The tools and supplies necessary are listed so you don't get started
and have to stop and run to a store. This book is for anyone that
wants to do their own repairs. Pamela
