Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle

4 Stars

You’re not bad Ellie. The world is bad and you’re just trying to survive it

Okay, let me just get this out, Sins & Needles wasn’t anything I expected. I read the glowing reviews, however the summary didn’t really interest me. I’m not a fan of “rough” looking gals, but I’m all for damaged characters, so I went in with an open mind.

Ellie’s parents are con artist and so is she. She left her home town when she was 18 years-old and hadn’t been back until now, at 26 years-old. She’s been on the run and decides the best place to get her life together again is back home. Camden was her childhood friend, but Ellie and Camden left on bad terms. Ellie is back in town in trouble and Camden isn’t the loser kid he was in high school anymore.

The summary/blurb isn’t exactly the story, but it’s enough to get you started. From page one I was thrown with a punch and I LOVED IT! I then, started to have high expectations because I enjoyed the prologue so much.

Let me tell you this, I hate flashbacks, but in Sins & Needles I actually enjoyed them. The flashbacks were scattered between chapters, but necessary and short enough to not be redundant. The flashbacks were scenes from Ellie’s past and some of Camden and Ellie’s interactions when they were in high school.

The Hero and Heroine are not your perfect characters. Basically there isn’t a good or bad guy. Having the imperfect characters were my favorite part of the book, however at one point, around the 20% mark I was really angry with Ellie and I was considering a 2 star rating (it never got there, but it was close). And, sure there are some obvious parts, but there are plenty of turns where you are interested.

Ellie isn’t the typical Heroine I read, but she grew on me. I’m not really fond of the whole pierced nipples, black hair/pixie hair cut, but I get it, she’s “badass”. Maybe I am a bit biased b/c I wasn’t fond of the cover, but that’s a personal opinion.

I wish everyone can see how he imprinted himself on my heart

Camden is all around my type of guy. Thank you for making the Hero wear emo black nerdy glasses! You just described my husband (okay I am digressing) and maybe I pushed my rating a bit higher just because of Camden, but so what, I LOVE CAMDEN!!! (despite the father scene, ug)

Nerdy + Rough = Camden = Hot *fanning myself*

He was a caring, hulking, nerd. And I wanted him

I must disclose this:

there is a cliff-hanger ending, HOWEVER you get enough in the end I wasn’t pulling my hair out and I kind of figure there would be an open ending, it is a trilogy, but don’t get confused with open ending with closed ending, it’s a pure Cliff Hanger ending, but that shouldn’t discourage you from the read!

I hope you give Sins & Needles a shot, it was jam pack with action, mild steamy scenes and quirky dialogue. I recommend.
