Via this blog I’ve discovered the Software Development Tools Directory , currently WITH 1518 REFERENCES TO tools that (may) assist software developers.

The directory IS classified IN many different categories (e.g. license TYPE). It IS surprising (even TO me!) TO see what happens WHEN you sort the “open source” category according TO the tools’ popularity. These are the results (as of today):

  • IceScrum (a tool for development teams using Scrum or another agile developement process)
  • ERModeller (a free CASE tool for data modeling)
  • ArgoUML (UML modeling tool)
  • StarUML (an extensible UML/MDA platform)
  • Arbiter (requirements gathering and acceptance testing tool)

3 of the tools in the top 5 are strictly modeling/MDD tools! I think this is quite positive, though you don’t GET the similar results ON the commercial category 🙁 Does this mean that developers ARE interested IN modeling tools (maybe just TO experiment WITH them a little BIT) but NOT yet ready TO pay FOR them?
