GIUSEPPE VAZANNO is one of the wealthiest and most beloved landowners in 1911, post-feudal Sicily. His lemon orchards provide work for the Sicilian peasants, a rich life for his brothers and their families, and a peaceful oasis for his wife Maria and their two daughters, sixteen-year-old Adriana and five-year-old Francesca.

But just before dawn one spring morning, Giuseppe's brothers Sevario and Santo awaken to the smell of smoke, and find Giuseppe's farmhouse burned to the ground. Adriana and Francesca are found safe, having taken refuge in a secret tunnel under the house, but are unable to talk about what they saw. The brothers find no trace of Giuseppe or his wife Maria and discover thier middle brother, Gaspano, has been brutally tortured and murdered just a few miles from Giuseppe's burned farmhouse.

Adrianna has a terrible secret--one she prays was not the cause of the horrors she has witnessed. She must confront her worst fear: was the destruction of her home just a random act of violence, or a deadly vendetta against her family?

A powerful story of love, betrayal, revenge, and the irrevocable bond of family, Deliver Us from Honor richly chronicles the story of the Vazanno family, caught in the social and political upheaval of 1911 Sicily that eventually will lead to the rise of the Mafia in America and change their family forever.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A robust tale of violence and vendettas." --Kirkus Reviews "Page turning, suspenseful, educational-- . . . a vivid portrait of Sicilian family life and the birth of La Cosa Nostra. If you liked The Godfather, you will love Deliver Us from Honor!" -Robin Welford "Sicilianophile is probably the best way to describe Sharon Valenti, author of the engrossing and exciting novel, "Deliver Us from Honor." Married to a Sicilian, Valenti immersed herself into the language, culture and history of Sicily. It was only a matter of time when she put her passion to work in an entertaining page-turner, in the tradition of Mario Puzo's "The Godfather." Hers is tale of romance, intrigue and mystery that delves into the rise of La Cosa Nostra and how it was first established in the United States. Organized crime is often portrayed as an urban phenomenon in literature and cinema. Yet, as we see in "Deliver Us from Honor," the mafia was rooted in the Sicilian countryside. It was more akin to America's Wild West than the streets of New York. Sicilian outlaws rode horses and attacked shipping routes through mountain passes. They stole, fought and killed and then made their way to an isolated village to take refuge and hide from the law. Much of "Deliver Us from Honor" is set in the farms and forests of Sicily. Valenti captures the richness of the region's agriculture where the best lemons and citrus fruits are grown. The people have a deep connection to the land; a knowledge of the workings of nature that transcends the novel. In "Deliver Us from Honor," the story begins in 1911 when Giuseppe Vazano's farm is destroyed by fire. Brothers Sevario and Santo come to his rescue only to find Giuseppe and his wife Maria missing and their middle brother Gaspano murdered. The only survivors are Giuseppe's daughters Adriana and Francesca and Gaspano's wife Nella and their two children Alfredo and Cinzia. Hiding in the backcountry temporarily, the family comes to the realization that the fire was set by arsonists. They seek to solve the mystery as to who set the blaze and why. Thus, starts a journey of characters and subplots that take us to a host of cities and villages throughout Sicily such as BALESTRATE, Corleone, Catania and Palermo. We see the inner play of priests, peasants and padrones and how they effect the tragedy and redemption of the Vazano family. Valenti's well-written novel highlights the transition of Sicilian society from feudal to modern. Most striking is how Sicily opens itself to the outside world by way of immigration and trade. "Deliver Us from Honor" is a compelling novel about the bonds of family and the nature of vendetta and omertà - two aspects of Sicily and Southern Italy. For Italian Americans with deep roots in Sicily, this book will be immediately understood as it brings to light the customs and traditions of the region. "Deliver Us from Honor" is an exemplary novel where characters come alive on every page to make it a resonating and engrossing work." -- PRIMO Magazine

S.E. Valenti graduated from Oakland University with a Masters degree in Nursing in 1997 and a post masters from University of Michigan in 1999 as a Nurse Practitioner. Having worked in healthcare since 1987, Valenti started a second career, that of author, in 2016. Her first full length novel, "Deliver Us from Evil" came from her many travels to Sicily with her husband. Her wealth of experience obtained as an NP has served this author well by enriching her life and adding to her life experiences from which she has drawn upon to write.

In 1995, Valenti traveled to Tanzania Africa to teach nursing faculty the latest treatments for HIV/AIDS. In 1908, Oakland University awarded Valenti their Odyssey Award for her work on the President's Advisory Committee for HIV/AIDS (Washington, D.C.) during the Bush Administration. She has authored several articles related to HIV/AIDS in prominent HIV journals as well. Her first novel, Deliver Us From Honor, debuted in October, 2016 and now her second novel in the series, "ATONEMENT" has just debuted, April 24, 2019! Her love of Sicily has generated two fictional novels based on the beauty, love, and loyalty of family in 1911 Sicily followed by the family's immigration to America in her second book, ATONEMENT".

Both novels provide insight into overcoming adversity and how the power of love and family is a strong ally in perilous times! Lessons learned from both novels are just as applicable today as they were in 1911!

“Deliver Us from Honor” is a sweeping epic, written adeptly by first-time author Valenti. She not only makes her characters jump off the page, but also is able to transport the reader to an era and place that most of us have never been, let alone think about. Her storytelling is thorough, yet the writing never trends toward the superfluous, even though there are many characters to follow. (My only suggestion would to include a family tree/”org chart” in subsequent editions and sequels.) This is a great beach read.

Deliver Us From Honor has all the qualities of a true page turner....adventure, suspense, loyalty, betrayal, love and sorrow. S.E. Valenti has a unique writing skill that makes the reader feel as if they are part of the story riding along side the Vazzano Family as they travel across Sicily. The book also provides an accurate description of Sicily's history, heritage and landscape. Bravo!! E.DiGi

I took this book with me on vacation. We traveled by train from Chicago to New Orleans. I felt as though I were right there with the characters! Sharon's writing grabs you from page one to the Epilogue! The characters get in your spirit and you feel what they feel. When I finished reading the last page, I wanted more. Best book I've read in a long time. Can't wait for the next one.

The story was great. Certainly seemed to be very authentic describing Sicilia at that time. My problem with it was the writing, which at times seemed juvenile. The author most probably is not Italian at all. Dumping in italicized words in "Italian" for emphasis is not needed, especially since the words "uttered" by the characters are in Portuguese or Spanish! A key character in the drama is mentioned quite often and only once his name is correctly written in Italian. Otherwise, its always Portuguese. It got so bad and comical that I started ignoring ALL the italicized words. And, brothers NEVER call each other "brother". Just bad writing. But, blame the editor for allowing all this to happen..Almost anyone doing something that someone doesn't agree with is called "bastardos". I hear this a lot in el barrio in the South Bronx but not in Italia.

Once again, terrible editing. If the author states that a character "takes the train from Napoli to Messina", the editor should realize that the tunnel or the bridge never existed. If you want to mention the terrible earthquake & tidal waves that devastated the city, which "fits" in this book, why allow the writer to say "1893" when it was in 1908. Just very, very sloppy. Could have been 6 stars. Too bad.

What a great book. It was difficult in the beginning to get used to all the different names, but once I got the hang of it, I could not put it down. I can't wait to read the sequels to find out what happens when the four brothers (Vito, Manricco, Guisseppi, and Battaghlia) meet and find out that their family has sailed to America, not knowing that Turiddu is also headed to America too!
