For the military, I always just have them replace their civilian clothes with the uniform since I believe trying to have them layer it can lead to issues with greaves not fitting on top of three thongs, two pants, and 13 dresses. Armor counts as clothing and doesn't rot,so I generally just have everyone in uniform for my forts. However, this can lead to some bad thoughts when they change into their new uniform since they will just immediately strip naked until they find their armor.

Anchors posted:However, this can lead to some bad thoughts when they change into their new uniform since they will just immediately strip naked until they find their armor. Yeah this is my worry. I mean, it's managable if you get all the armor and weapons into one place, and then confine all the mildwarfs there, and then get them to change quickly. But that very simple statement represents months and months of item management in the fortress, and if I screw up and miss a bin of armor somewhere, I might well get a dozen naked dwarfs streaking through the place going berzerk with rage and armed with adamantium weaponry. It could get real ugly. But it's an option for the future if I really can't get the fuckers to put on some decent armor. With the uniform specifying the best possible pieces it's baffling how many put on a pair of wooden greaves, or a bunch of copper armor pieces, etc. We have literally hundreds of pieces of iron-or-better armor.

I try very hard to play the game that is given to me, and not the game that I'd want it to be. I know that seems asinine but I prefer to look at it as engaging with the natural dwarf behavior Toady created, rather than hacking the dwarves to be as efficient as I'd want them to be. For story purposes.

24th Malachite, 252 I found a cluster of dwarves waiting for me at my office. “We're here to volunteer” boomed Grey Hunter, whose voice is surprisingly deep for a dwarf of his age. “Volunteer for what?” I queried them with puzzlement. “They're here to mine” declared Impy, who emphasized her statement with a thump of her well-worn pick. “So am I,” she added. “But... do you all understand the danger? The job is on the surface, out beyond the stream. There is a real danger of the murk, and if goblins come it's a long way back inside. ” There was a shuffling of feet and a murmur of nodding and “aye”s. “We're not sure what you're doing, Leperfish, but at least you're doing something” said Grey Hunter's older brother, Tarox, whose right arm ends just below the elbow with a rope reed fiber dressing. “Alright,” I told them. “Well... GrimRevenant, are you sure? You're one of the best engravers ever...” “It's just a big engraving, is how I see it” she intoned. “And I don't mind working outdoors.” “And JimmyTheD... your farming and bone crafting skills are unsurpassed, and you've got that crutch...” “I've been here since almost the beginning, Leperfish, and I know how to mine. And I ran this place back in 273. Don't tell me what I can't do with a pick if I want to.” There was another former Overseer among the group, too: Neddy Seagoon, whom most dwarves merely call 'The Crazy One.' He stared at the floor and muttered under his breath. His presence reminded me of another problem, one which the rumors and whispers say he caused, that still must be addressed. Later. “So be it. Impy, Post Poste, Toiwat: you're the most experienced miners. Show the others what to do, make sure they don't put a pick through their feet, and finish as quickly as you can.” “Esme!” I called, as the rest started to file down the hall. Kennel's wife turned back, shifting baby Trundel from one arm to another. Held firmly in the infant's grip was a little toy pick. “What?” she said impatiently. “I don't think that's such a good idea,” I told her. “We've already had a baby snatched recently... maybe leave Trundel inside while you mine? I'm sure Kennel could look after her...” “No no” she laughed, “I'm not mining. Trundel's the one who will be mining! Isn't it adorable?” I confess I gaped for some time before mustering response. “A tiny baby can't mine...” I started, finally. “A child does as she pleases!” Esme nearly shouted, suddenly angry. “That may be so,” I told her, “but a child is never assigned mining jobs. You can't go.” Esme left upset but she will obey work restrictions. I have joy I am never married nor have fathered a child because motherhood is a kind of insanity. Outdoor mining crew: Grey Hunter, Impy, SynthOrange, Tarox, GrimRevenant, JimmyTheD, Neddy Seagoon, Post Poste, Halloween Jack, Toiwat. 25th Malachite I re-stationed the on-duty squads into the new outer courtyard. The militia can respond to a goblin thief or be protected inside our walls if an invasion comes. 26th Malachite Davincie finished collecting the materials for her great work. It is too much to hope it will be useful but we all may be certain it will be magnificent. 27th Malachite The bone doctor Natty Ninefingers reported interrupted a job due to Forgotten Beast Sighting! Greatly alarmed I located Natty Ninefingers who explained the sight of the forgotten beast Zikath Taronamas Othashgakit Ovus the Iguano Don't from a staircase is too frightening to bear but it is the bottom of a stair that is open to the caverns below which the beast swims in cold black waters. It is a strange place for an open stairwell. I order hatch covers placed and locked to prevent fright and also a flying terror or poisonous vapors or giant spiders walking on cavern ceilings to enter. 28th Malachite GrimRevenant is the first to go out to the dangerous mining. The elves are still packing. They neatly fold each threadbare trousers and ragged thong and enormous troll fur cloak. Of course we did not sell any wooden bins therefore every item must be individually secured to a beast's back. We snigger and mock them where they cannot hear. 2nd Galena Davincie has graced us with the most splendid short leather skirt ever beheld by dwarven kind. Gutid Gazot, The Utterance of Sloth, glitters with encrusted jewels. Its fashionable panels portray historical and allegorical scenes, and the artifact adamantine mug Tiredhours to remind the viewer of good drink after hard labor and the fortune of Bronzestabbed brought to ones lips full of foamy Longland Beer. The thin coati leather will never serve to protect the legs of a warrior but a short skirt has other useful purposes. All hail Davincie Monangkubuk! GrimRevenant dug a single hole and then determined digging by herself among the Glumpwrongs is not preferable to hauling. I suppose the other volunteers are still equipping themselves with picks. 4th Galena We are temporarily permitted to sell socks. Kalman surely knows the elves will not bargain with us further this year. If a human caravan comes she will ban them again. JimmyTheD and Post Poste went out to dig. Moose King and Qvark went out with them: a handful of trees must be felled that stand in the way of the channel. 8th Galena Magrov's ghost is haunting the gatehouse above the inner courtyard drawbridge. Magrov was killed in battle by goblins and deserves proper memorial. Impy walking out to dig was passed by the other miners coming in. Drinks and rest and other duties call away the volunteers soon after they venture into the wilds beyond the stream. 9th Galena Impy cut five times more dirt in one day than all other volunteers in the previous week, before coming back in. Impy is not intimidated by murk-haunted savannah. 12th Galena The laggard elves are finally departing. Their steeds' legs bow and wobble. All but one of them elected to take the longer way out. 13th Galena The goblins are waiting for them.

This the diary of 'Impy' Copperbulwarks, engraved on shale. It contains an image of 'Impy' Copperbulwarks and Dwarves. 'Impy' Copperbulwarks is mining. The Dwarves are malingering. The image relates to the Outside Mining by 'Impy' Copperbulwarks on 8th Galena, 252. All craftsdwarfship is of mediocre quality. 24th Malachite, 252 Overseer Leperfish asked for volunteers to do Mining out by the Glumpwrongs where the Murk comes. I volunteered, because Mining is my profession, and if the volunteers have no miners, their craftdwarfship will be poor. Among the volunteers were Poste Paste and Toiwat who know Mining, also JimmyTheD who knows Mining even though her foot is gone. The rest know little of mining, and will make everything go poorly. This endeavour is doomed. 8th Galena, 252 It is my turn to do the Outside Mining. GrimRevenant the not-miner, Poste Paste and JimmyTheD the miners have done the Duty before me. Many Dwarves say there are great dangers to be outside mining where we are. I heed these words, but I do not hold merit to them: I do not think the dangers are anywhere near as bad as they have been made out to be. 9th Galena, 252 I am vexed with disappointment. How can three dwarves, two of whom miners, do barely one fifth of the work of a hardworking miner? Am I going to have to do all of this myself? Am I the only one putting effort in here? Leperfish will hear of this. I am fond of industry, there was not much industry done out there by miners who are not me.

The Goblins are just there to make sure that Leperflesh can never get all those clothes out of the fortress. Which is why I resorted to lava dumping. I guess one of the other overseers scrapped my dump designations too. Though now I'm kinda wishing I'd set up a cart system instead. With added Magma collection port. Ah well. Hindsight.

My understanding is that items that are dumped in the magma do not get fully removed from the game's item-tracking code, so while they clean up the fortress cosmetically they don't help with FPS. I might be wrong about that, though. The magma dump is still functional. LeJackal posted:I'm just curious, but are these artifacts and heroes still getting deposited in the Crackmaster Cultural Vault? Not really, because I've been lazy about it. There's a bunch of unused built coffins so when heroes die they get assigned a coffin immediately - so I'd have to move them like you did, and that hasn't been a high priority for me. I should probably get around to that sometime.
