Before you dive in and install Snow Leopard over Leopard, be sure to do a complete backup of your drive! I cloned mine with Carbon Copy Cloner, just in case something didn't work. I haven't needed it, but I'll keep the clone for a few weeks, just in case. I have known two people who were very glad they did this, because they hosed their installations and had to re-do them!

OS X continues to grow and evolve. This "under the hood" upgrade paves the way for many great things to happen in the world of OS X software. As such, users won't see a heck of a lot of difference in their computers right away, if they were using Leopard. Yes, you gain back some space, because support for Power PC chips is gone. Your hard drive suddenly seems to have more gigabytes of maximum capacity, because 1 GB = 1000 MB, instead of 1024 MB in previous systems. This was intended to relieve some confusion over how drive manufacturers market their disks, but will inevitably add its own confusion to the mix...

Oh, there are at least 100 things new, here, but they're very subtle. [...]

Everything is a bit zippier due to the native code, and due to most of the system running in 64-bit mode. Yeah, the kernel starts in 32-bit mode by default, but that is a VERY good thing, for compatibility with older drivers and other third party software that is not yet updated. Certain high-end systems will run in 64-bit by default - mostly servers - but the rest of us will benefit from the kernel's staying in 32-bit unless we start up while holding down the 6 and 4 keys.

Check out[...] lists of applications that are, and are not, compatible with this upgrade. You will inevitably have to download some updates and patches to get some of your software and hardware to run, especially if you haven't done that in a while.

Yes, Rosetta still works, so you can run older programs that are not Intel-ready. It's off by default, but you can do a custom installation of OS X to install it, or you can connect to the Internet the first time you need it, and Software Update will load it for you. I finally gave up on Office 2004 and upgraded to Office 2008, though, because the speed gains in Office 2008 in Intel mode are substantial. I only wish my company used Exchange Server 2007 so I wouldn't even have to use Office! Snow Leopard works very well with Exchange Server 2007, according to friends who use Mail, iCal, etc. with it.

With any major "point upgrade," there can be unknown anomalies and incompatibilities. So far, I haven't had many issues*. I'm still running Tiger on an older Power PC machine, though, just in case. It has saved me a lot of angst to always keep an old machine around when I get a new one, just so I can be sure my older software will run until it's stable on the new platform, or I've learned its replacement.

*Check your printer manufacturer's website to be sure there's a compatible driver. If you use any exotic hardware, such as an eSATA Express Card, be sure to find the latest drivers for it before you upgrade. If you use Adobe Creative Suite 3, or Photoshop CS3, read the forums regarding compatibility issues. I haven't found any, but it's not supported by Adobe, so you'll have to decide whether to upgrade to CS4 (which is only 32-bit, but is supported), or wait for CS5 (which should be 64-bit). I'm waiting... Adobe suites are pricey, and I don't need the few new goodies in CS4 badly enough to upgrade. But CS5 should be worth it.

All in all, Snow Leopard will add finesse, speed, and drive space immediately. It will add even more speed and power down the road. If you have kids, the new system allows you to set timers on their computer usage and keep them away from porn sites. However, the most important advances will be for power users, because they allow easier multi-threaded, multi-processor number crunching, and use of the graphics card processor to do heavy data lifting. If you edit video, do lots of higher math, or process images for gargantuan prints, you know what I mean. If you just surf the 'Net, do email, and simple office work, this upgrade is less important. Still, at $[...] or so, it's a no-brainer. Do it cautiously, but do it.

I am a business owner so PC has been my life since 1988. I have owned several Macs, but for home use mostly. Two Years ago I switched to Mac for my business, and have not looked back. Being a Windows user, and somewhat of a geek, it is common knowledge in geekdom to ALWAYS do a clean install with Windows. My advise is do the same with Snow Leopard. Here is how to install.

    1. Back up all of your important files. If you were smart all of your files will be in your documents section thus one folder to burn to DVD. I use backup with Mobile Me, but I still burn my files to DVD when doing a new install. No need to risk losing files and jacking with back up.

    2. Clean Install Snow, DO NOT UPGRADE!!!

    3. After install get your updates from Apple.

    4. Hit the update button again!!! Yes, I said do update again. You want to make sure you are totally updated.

    5. Install software you would like to use. I use mostly Apple Software. I-Works 08, I-Life 08, Popcorn, ect,,,

    6. Run update again.

    7. Run update again, make sure everything is up to date.

    8. Move your files from your DVD back to Documents folder, and your done.

The only werid thing I've had happen so far was with Address Book. When I restored from Mobile Me, It Moved contacts from one group to another. That did suck, I have a lot of customers. But with drag and drop it was solved in jiffy.

Being so new I have yet to master all of the new features. It is faster, I was quite suprised. Some of the new finder features were not as friendly to my "style" of filing. Example: Working with two finder windows open. One is receiving scanned documents, one is making folders, when the scanned image is loaded into finder, it switches to that finder instead of staying with the one your working in. Leopard did not do this.

Printers: The only printers I have tried are the following. Epson Multifunction, HP 5610 multifunction and Minolta 2530 Color Laser. They all worked perfectly. AGAIN INSTALL UPDATES BEFORE INSTALLING PRINTERS!!! Also check printer website for new drivers.

My favorite function. This may seem bland to some people but the new Preview is the bomb. I use my cheap HP 5610 as a fax, copier and scanner. You can take a stack of documents, load them in the HP, start Preview, scan the entire stack of documents with one click inside preview. If that was not cool enough, you can then save all of the documents together as one PDF file, or you can drag and drop each page as a single file to the desktop or where ever!!! Now that is just too cool if your a business owner and need to keep massive numbers of customers and legal documents tidy. We are going paperless, and this one feature is worth $29. This could also be cool with photos laying around before you went digital. Scan the stack of photos in random order, place folders on desktop of different events, (Birthday, Christmas, ect...), then drag each picture from Preview to the correct folder. Your old photo's organized fast.

Safari 4 was not that great on Leopard. It had all kinds of issues with certain web pages. But, to my suprise again, it works great in Leopard. Not sure why, but it does. Have not even installed Fire Fox.

    店員さんに、10.5.8からLionへのバージョンアップの仕方を教えてもらい、
    必要になる10.6の在庫の有無を尋ねたところ「在庫は無いので中古ショップで探すか、
    オークションを利用するしかない。なければPC本体を買いかえるしかない」と言われました。
    (買いかえるとなると下取り出しても当時3〜4万はかかると教えて貰ったような…)

    今思えばそこですんなり信じず、Appleストアに問い合わせするなりすれば良かった…かも;
    一応「World〜」さんのマワシモノでは無いことを追記しておきます!(笑)

Having been using Leopard for a few years, I never took the plunge to Snow Leopard thinking I would miss it out and go to Lion. However, to upgrade to Lion you must access the App Store and be using Snow Leopard. Great! I therefore had to get this first, but for a small outlay, would be worth it.

After a 40 minute install, I then did the updates which were a few Mb in size, and now have an up-to-date OS. On the surface there does not appear to be much difference, however, once you start delving into the small items, you notice the difference. To start with the App Store icon is on the dock, right clicking a dock icon the menu is dark grey, Quiktime has been improved, the Application Folder has larger icons etc. But once you get into it, the small things tend to make a big difference.

My printer never displayed the ink levels on screen, now they do. You can set more variables in calendar, shut down is quicker, support for multi touch gestures (which will be more so in Lion), imprived security, faster load times, better space on the hard drive.

Overall, glad I took the plunge, even if it is only for a month or so before it gets upgraded again.

    EDIT:
Just noticed that it is out of stock now. As Apple tend to discontinue older OS when a new one comes out, looks like I got it at the right time.
