Hillary Hahn and Hauschka - Selections from Silfra
Hilary Hahn, three time Grammy Award-winning violinist has gained international recognition for her probing interpretations, compelling stage presence, and commitment to a wide range of repertoire as well as newly commissioned music. She is an avid writer, posting journal entries and articles on her website, www.hilaryhahn.com. Additionally, she produces a YouTube channel, youtube.com/hilaryhahnvideos, where she frequently interviews guests from around the world. Elsewhere, her violin case comments on life as a traveling companion, on Twitter and Instagram at @violincase. She has appeared on the covers of most major classical music publications and has been featured in mainstream periodicals such as Vogue, Elle, Town & Country, and Marie Claire. In 2001 Hahn was named "America's Best Young Classical Musician" by Time magazine.

Hauschka, the musical alias of Düsseldorf, Germany-based Volker Bertelmann, is predominantly known throughout both the classical and experimental music worlds for his seven albums since 2004 that explore the possibilities of the prepared piano. By modifying the piano's innards with an assortment of odds and ends such as gaffer tape, aluminum foil, bottle tops, bells and ping pong balls he transforms the pure tuned instrument into mini rhythm sections. In addition to his records, Bertelmann scored the feature film "Glueck," produced by Constantin Film and directed by Doris Doerrie. His videos have been twice nominated for the UK Music Video Award and in 2010 he composed music for two major theater pieces at the Frankfurt and Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus.

Together they created Silfra, their highly anticipated 2012 album named for the area just outside of Reykjavia which marks the divide between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. However, the album serves more as a seam binding two entities than a rift. According to the artists, "Silfra grew out of our efforts to find an integrated musical voice as a duo instead of simply mixing together what we typically do on our own."

"We recorded this album in Iceland, which was a symbolic location for us between our continents of origin. It was a place to meet in the middle, but not because it combines Europe and America. It has its own character. We felt that we could go anywhere we wanted within the music if we created it in surroundings that would give us the freedom and independence to explore.
We prepared for two years. We didn't start out to make a record. Silfra grew out of our efforts to find an integrated musical voice as a duo instead of simply mixing together what we typically do on our own. We met regularly for improvisation sessions. Eventually, we had taken our work as far as we could in rehearsal and it was time to challenge ourselves further, so we went into the studio. We showed up with virtually no pre-planned material but with a clear sense of how we wanted to proceed. We were surprised by how far the process pushed us. Our decision to record in Iceland made a big difference. That country is small, vibrant, and hardy, an environment in which artists are encouraged to follow their creative instincts. We could not have made this particular album anywhere else."
