As Adam Gase prepares for his first season as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator, he is quick to credit the man who had the job before him — new Chargers head coach Mike McCoy — for getting him ready.

Gase said McCoy often put Gase in position to call plays in game situations last season.

“Mike did a great job in letting me help him in everything we did,” Gase said. “I owe him a lot because he was always kind of preparing me for this role, and that’s one thing I’ll never be able to thank Mike enough for doing for me, making sure I was ready to be in this position.”

Gase said that between offensive series he would be ready with play suggestions, in case McCoy asked. “He’d be like, ‘Hey, what do you like here on third down?’ And I’d have to have an answer. If he didn’t like it, he would move on to something else,” Gase said.

Asked if he believed McCoy was intentionally preparing him to call plays, Gase said: “I think he was. That’s what I always felt, that he was always trying to put me in a position so when I was in that spot, I was ready.”

Welcome, Wes. With the addition of wide receiver Wes Welker, how will the Broncos divvy up the work in the passing game this year?

Gase said wideouts Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas aren’t concerned about their reception totals.

“I’ve never been around, in my short career, two guys that were so unselfish,” Gase said. “Adding Wes to that group, it even amps up. Nobody talks about ‘How many balls am I going to get? How many touchdowns?’ These guys are all about winning. The amount of catches they get during a season, those guys don’t talk about stuff like that.”

Said Thomas: “We never talk about catches.”

Footnotes. The Broncos waived running back Mario Fannin, who spent the past two seasons on injured reserve with knee and Achilles tendon injuries. … Safety Blake Gideon was designated as reserve/retired by the team. … Hall of Famer Floyd Little attended practice Wednesday.
