PUNE: Over the last few days the city has been witnessing light rainfall and there was no major change reported on Friday. Till 8.30 pm, 5.1 mm was recorded.
The irrigation department stated that it would hold a meeting with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials within the next 2 or 3 days in order to decide whether there should be a reduction in the existing 40% water cut.
Avinash Surve, superintending engineer of the Pune irrigation department told TOI, "The water levels in the dams have reached the 55.55% mark. Considering this, we will discuss whether the water cut should be lessened."
Surve added that if it were decided to reduce the water cut, it would be in a phased manner. "The irrigation department is already supplying water to Pune city at full capacity from the Mutha right canal as well as through the pipeline from Khadakwasla dam. This has given citizens respite from the water cut for the last 10 days."
The collective water level at Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla reached 15.40 TMC (55.55%) on Friday. The irrigation department continued to discharge water from Khadakwasla dam through the river at the rate of 6,724 cusecs. The water level at Temghar reached was 1.77 TMC (77.86%), Panshet was 5.70 TMC (53.50%) and Varasgaon was 5.96 TMC (46.46%). Khadakwasla dam has 1.97 TMC (100%) water storage.
Meanwhile, IMD officials pointed out that the current phase of light rains will continue for a couple of days more.
According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) weather report, the low pressure area over west Madhya Pradesh and the neighbourhood has merged with the monsoon trough. An associated cyclonic circulation is present over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southeast Rajasthan. Apart from these systems, an off-shore trough at sea level from south Gujarat coast to Karnataka coast persists.
The report also points out that the southwest monsoon has been vigorous in Saurashtra & Kutch and active in east Rajasthan and Gujarat. However, it has been subdued over Jharkhand, west Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka and Kerala.
