Testimony from Canon Andrew White in Iraq – Praise God for New Life!

October 1, 2014

Yesterday we posted a prayer request / update from Canon Andrew White in Iraq.

How wonderful this morning to read a brief status update from him about the amazing joy and privilege he had to baptize 5 people this morning!

I Have Baptized 5 People Today.
One of the Christian politicians came to me and pleaded with me to Baptize a mother and her four children. I listened to them and it was clear they all loved Jesus. I therefore baptized them all. Afterwards the 11 year old boy came up to me and said I feel new, I said you are.

Thanks be to God who shines His light in the darkness and brings life out of death.

Praying for Iraq & ISIS situation – Update from Canon White in Baghdad

September 30, 2014

Although we are focusing alot of attention here at L&B on Ebola, the situation in Iraq desperately needs our prayers as well.

Here is the latest update from Canon White in Baghdad. PLEASE Read it and PRAY.

A key excerpt:

The latest news this morning appears to be that the further advance of ISIS towards Baghdad appears to have been halted. How far they are from here varies according to who is providing the information but they appear to be 5-15 miles away and in the last 12 hours have not got closer. So we live in hope. … We seriously need your prayer.

The Persecuted Church–Iraq (Re-posted)

September 14, 2014

From The Telegraph:

“Christians are so frightened,” Canon White says. “The Christians here are frightened even to walk to church because they might come under attack. All the churches are targets.
“We used to have 1.5 million Christians, now we have probably only got 200,000 left in Iraq. There are more Iraqi Christians in Chicago than here.”

–There have been Christians in Iraq since the first century. Acts 2:9 records Parthians from Mesopotamia in the crowd as the Apostle Peter preached at Pentecost.
–During the fourth century, Persia’s Zoroastrian zeal against the newly Christianized Roman Empire threatened to destroy the Christians living in the Mesopotamian lands of modern-day Iraq.
–The European Christian crusaders often saw the Iraqi Christians as false and the Muslims saw them as part of the enemy.
–Church historian Kenneth Scott Latourette found it amazing, not that Christianity survived as a minority cult, “but that it survived at all.”

Nahum 1:7-8 (New Living Translation)
The Lord is good,
a strong refuge when trouble comes.
He is close to those who trust in him.
But he will sweep away his enemies
in an overwhelming flood.
He will pursue his foes
into the darkness of night.

O Lord,
Our hearts cry out for so much spilled blood. Is the land cursed with violence from Cain’s murder of Abel?
Jesus wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus. How many times has He wept in Iraq? Might His Blood shed on the cross break this curse on the land!
Be close to the Iraqis who trust in You. Sweep away their enemies in an overwhelming flood and pursue their foes into the darkness of night.
Stay close to them, dear Lord. Stay close. Amen.

A Call to Prayer for those Suffering in Iraq and Syria – For Sunday August 24 (includes suggested prayers)

August 21, 2014

Archbishop Foley Beach of the Anglican Church in North America has issued a call to prayer for the Middle East for this Sunday August 24.

Earlier this month I called upon the members of the Anglican Church in North America to pray and support our Christian brothers and sisters in Iraq and Syria.  You can read that appeal in more detail here.

As a continuation of that appeal I am calling our churches to include a special time of prayer for the persecuted church during their services this Sunday, August 24th.

A prayer resource has been created to assist you and your congregation this week and you are welcome to use it as long as you deem appropriate. (PDF, Word)

Last week, Canon Andrew White, an Anglican known as the Vicar of Baghdad, vested in red in recognition of the martyrs who gave their life for Christ over the last few weeks, some of whom were members of his own congregation.  Clergy who are celebrating or officiating this week are welcome to vest in the color red in solidarity with them and in recognition of this testimony to Christ.

Your brother at the foot of the Cross,

The Most Rev. Dr. Foley Beach
Archbishop and Primate
Anglican Church in North America

The short prayer service includes: A responsive reading from Psalm 83; An Opening Prayer; Time for personal or corporate prayer (with optional prayers provided) and a Closing Prayer.

The optional suggested prayers include prayers: For Our Enemies, For Muslims, Against Evil, Against Jihad, For Those Martyred, For the Church Catholic

You can find Archbishop Foley’s exhortation here
The prayer resource is available as a PDF file or as Word Doc. Please pray and please share this widely!

From Fox News: Iraqi and Kurdish forces retake Mosul Dam.

Psalm 29:3-4 (ESV)
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

We ascribe to You glory, Lord God. We extol Your holy name. Your majestic, powerful voice is over the waters of the Tigris River. Your majestic, powerful voice is over the waters at Mosul Dam. We honor You and bless You.
Holy is the Lord. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.

Northern Iraq

August 16, 2014

Christians are besieged, displaced, homeless, and destitute in northern Iraq.

Psalm 31:21-22 (ESV)
Blessed be the Lord,
for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me
when I was in a besieged city.
I had said in my alarm,
“I am cut off from your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy
when I cried to you for help.

O Lord,
Hear the voices of Your children in northern Iraq and show Your steadfast love. Amen.

Psalm 29:1-4 (ESV)
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

We ascribe to You glory, Lord God. We extol Your holy name. Your majestic, powerful voice is over the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. We honor You and bless You.
Holy is the Lord. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts. Amen.

Genesis 6:2-5 (NKJV)
. . . the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Job 1:6 (NKJV)
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

Dear Heavenly Father,
I am a fallen creature. I do not understand these scriptures. Lord, have mercy. I give you my lack of understanding.

I do understand this. Christ Jesus is the Son of Man.

Though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

If, in any way, the sons of God, the giants, and the mighty men of old hold sway in Iraq,
If, in any way, the sons of God, the giants, and the mighty men of old are blocking the establishment of Your kingdom in Iraq,
We humbly invite Christ Jesus, the Son of Man, to break their stranglehold and to remove their obstructions. Your kingdom come, Your will be done in Iraq as it is in heaven. Amen.

Syria and Iraq

Proverbs 17:13 (ESV)
If anyone returns evil for good,
evil will not depart from his house.

Our Father in heaven,

Surely there are persons in Syria and Iraq who have not returned evil for good.  Guard and protect them from predators.  Amen.

Polio–from Syria to Iraq

March 29, 2014

From The Guardian: The first case of polio in Iraq has now been diagnosed.

“Seriously damaged health infrastructure, poor health access and utilisation because of insecurity inside Syria, and massive movements of vulnerable and at-risk populations in and out of Syria – all make controlling the outbreak and rendering health protection to Palestine refugees in Syria and across the region very challenging.”

Psalm 40:11-13 (NKJV)
Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O Lord;
Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.
For innumerable evils have surrounded me;
My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up;
They are more than the hairs of my head;
Therefore my heart fails me.
Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;
O Lord, make haste to help me!

O Father,
Bring the children of the Middle East out of out of this horrible pit of hatred, war, destruction, and disease. Lift them out of the miry clay of lies. Set their feet upon the Rock of Truth and establish their steps. Have mercy, Lord. Have mercy. Amen.

Al Qaeda is in Iraq.
For St. George’s, Baghdad:

Psalm 31:19-24 (NIVUK)
How abundant are the good things
that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,
on those who take refuge in you.
In the shelter of your presence you hide them
from all human intrigues;
you keep them safe in your dwelling
from accusing tongues.
Praise be to the Lord,
for he showed me the wonders of his love
when I was in a city under siege.
In my alarm I said,
‘I am cut off from your sight!’
Yet you heard my cry for mercy
when I called to you for help.
Love the Lord, all his faithful people!
The Lord preserves those who are true to him,
but the proud he pays back in full.
Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the Lord.

Iraq–St. George’s, Baghdad

February 11, 2014

Mary Ailes has drawn our attention to the plight of Canon Andrew White in Iraq–“more than horrendous.”

2 Samuel 22:3
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

Our Father in heaven,
St. George’s church in Baghdad is part of Your household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone. Jesus Christ is a choice stone, a precious cornerstone, and he who believes in Him shall not be disappointed.
We entrust St. George’s to You. You are their shield and the horn of their salvation. You are their high tower, their refuge, and their savior. Save them from violence, we pray. Preserve this church. Amen.

Rachel dies in childbirth. She names the newborn Son of sorrow. Jacob renames him Son of my right hand.
So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem), and Jacob set up a pillar at her grave; it is the pillar of Rachel’s tomb, which is there to this day. Israel [Jacob] journeyed on, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. (Gen 35:19-21 NRSV)

Scholars interpret Micah 4:8 as a prophesy indicating that the Messiah would be revealed from the “tower of the flock” (Migdal Eder) which is connected with the town of Bethlehem, southeast of Jerusalem.
And you, O tower of the flock,
hill of daughter Zion, to you it shall come, the former dominion shall come,
the sovereignty of daughter Jerusalem.
(Micah 4:8 NRSV)

Mishnaic sources indicate that the flocks tended in the fields around Bethlehem were raised for the ritual sacrifices of the Jerusalem temple.

Our Father in heaven,
In her death, Jacob’s beloved wife Rachel brings forth new life. In His death, Your beloved Son Jesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God, brings forth new life for mankind. We thank You for giving us new life.
Iraq has seen much death through violence, war, and disease. Have mercy, Lord, and bring her new life in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Our Father Eternal, El Olam,
From the Babylonian exile, there have been Jews praising Your name in Iraq. On the day of Pentecost, Parthians from Mesopotamia, filled with the Holy Spirit, were praising the name of Your Son Jesus.
Holy Scripture teaches us that You are enthroned on the praises of Your people. We claim this promise over Iraq. We claim this promise for all of the praises of Israel and of the Christians through the millennia in Iraq. Time is Your servant. You are enthroned on the praises of Your people through time and beyond time. May Your name be praised in Iraq. Amen.
