I got it! I'm going to let it seed.

Jeff sounds pretty good, but Steve Augeri does a much better job on Ask The Lonely. It sounds like JSS was really struggling with that one (and a few others). Maybe he's still getting acclimated. The band, however, sounds damn incredible!

I hate to say it, but from what I've heard so far they need to get Augeri healed and bring him back.

I guess I'll know for sure tonight in Nashville.

Ok, I am a fan of JSS. However, this pairing sounds odd. I will go see it in Atlantic City for sure. However, Augeri was a better fit from 98-04. That's ok though. A new recording and laying off the "dirty dozen" is what will work for this lineup IMO.

Still think Queen should have chosen Jeff. He sounds amazing doing that material.

I don't really like it either. Not a good fit.

I like the take on Separate Ways. Different, but good. It suits Jeff voice better than some of the other songs.

Jeff sounds like a "temporary" stand in. He is an awesome singer, and certain parts are fine, but it's just odd. I will support it for sure, but I think Augeri really shouldn't be bashed anymore. He was a good replacement for Perry until burned out and poor band decision making recently. Something about his voice (although in no way Steve Perry) just fit well.

I think that a new Journey album with Jeff could be interesting, but will be more in the Soul SirkUS veign. Fine by me.

Again this is just early opinions and ramblings from me. I'm going to give this stuff a lot more listens.

I'm listening to it now, too, and I feel the same way. Sounds odd. If hiring Soto was supposed to be a way to make fans realize how good Augeri is/was, mission accomplished.

Yep..."Ask The Lonely" is the first one I listened to. The only one I've listened to so far. I think JSS sounds VERY bad on it, IMO. People are WAY over hyping JSS if this is what he sounds like. It's a good sounding boot, BTW.

It's a fantasy to think they are going to move away from the 'dirty dozen'. You will get three 'new' songs at most from Journey from now on...no matter who is singing...and by 'new' I mean from Arrival on.

Highly impressed with Deen's vocals. Journey's MVP this year.

Thanks Barb

well.... JSS certainly isnt a "natural" is he?? Some of it sounds ok... bits quite good... but overall... nothing special really..and Journey need someone who has that "special" touch to his voice dont they..Perry had it in spades...Augeri had a fair share of it... inevietably JSS will get better in time..as he gets his head around the set and songs.... but.... well....
Im totally "underwhelmed" really..

...kinda like a "reasonable" attempt by a kareoke singer in a bar... it only really sounds "spot on" when Deen doubles up..or sings the real high parts.... its obvious Jrny will have to "tune down" a semi tone to help the guy out... and please do it fast guys..save JSS's embarrasment (this is of course much harder to do if "backing tapes" of vocals are involved... means a lot o messing about changing the key in a suitable pc programme)

Yes, agreed for sure! And notice, that when a crippled Augeri deferred to Deen for high notes he was crucified. Guess what? Jeff does the same thing. (Nothing wrong with that either - just sayin')

think in a live situ... people get carried away with how the singer behaves on stage... if the guy is "animated" like JSS obviously is... it takes yr concentration off the sound of the vocals...its only when u hear them later in isolation..in the comfort of yr living room..that you begin "hear" it properly ...warts n all!!

Augeri was knocked by some for being too laid back whilst on stage...personally i preffer laid back and in tune(pre tapegate) to manic and...erm.... slightly flat!!

Here's my take after a few quick listens. I have two shows coming up next week, so I'll have to see it in person to make a total judgement.

I, too, am not sure what to think of this pairing. It appears to me that JSS does struggle on some high parts, although I know people here have said he doesn't have any trouble with the high notes. I'm listening to Escape as I type this, around the 3:00 mark. I would think that Journey's high notes are different than anything he has ever sung before. Now Dead Or Alive has come on and JSS sounds great. His voice singing Journey will take some getting used to.

Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing them twice next week and will get the whole package before making a decision one way or the other.
