The Five-Question Exercise

Context:  Imagine a child whom you love and care about deeply, and this child is just starting preschool or kindergarten this year.  Consider the following questions:

1. What will the world be like twenty or so years from now when this child has left school and is out in the world?  Consider what life was like as far back as you can remember and all the changes you have seen happen.  Then imagine what will happen in the next 20 years. *
2. What knowledge and skills will this child need to excel in the world of you have imagined 20 years from now, in 2031? *
3. Think about the times when you are really learning, so much and so deeply, that you would call these the “peak learning experiences” of your life.  What were the conditions that made your high-performance learning experiences so powerful? *
4. Look over your responses to the first three questions.  How do students currently spend their time each day in school?   *
5. What would the educational experience be like if it were designed around your answers to the first three questions?   *
