About the author

Ann is the mother of two daughters and one son, and the grandmother of four grandsons (including twin boys) and two granddaughters, both of whom are her namesakes. When her children were in college, she decided to complete her own education, enrolling in the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Literature. Reluctant to return to an empty nest, she continued her education by enrolling in the English Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned both the Master's and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Afterwards, she taught Literature and the Humanities at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Ann's writing career began in the early eighties when two mysteries were published as original paperbacks: THE MURDER CURE and THE MURDER STROKE. A few years later, her first hardcover book was published: THE PILGRIMAGE, an adventure story set in the nineteenth century. All three books are now out of print, but occasionally a used copy of THE PILGRIMAGE appears on Amazon.com for sale.
The publication of the first Miss Julia book, MISS JULIA SPEAKS HER MIND in 1999, set Ann on a full-time writing career. This book went through six reprintings in less than a year, and was ranked #9 on the Independent Booksellers' seventy-six most highly recommended books for 1999. In addition, the book was named to the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers list. The paperback edition of the same book was listed in The Best Books of the First Five Years by BookSense, as one of the titles independent booksellers most enjoyed handselling. The book was also published by Readers Digest Condensed Books, appearing in twelve foreign languages.
MISS JULIA TAKES OVER was one of seven nominees for the Book of the Year Award (2001) by the Southeastern Booksellers Association.
All of the books in the series are available on audiotape and in large-print editions, and are also available through The Literary Guild/Doubleday Book Club. All of the books, except the newest one each year, can be found in paperback editions.
MISS JULIA THROWS A WEDDING, MISS JULIA HITS THE ROAD, MISS JULIA MEETS HER MATCH, and MISS JULIA'S SCHOOL OF BEAUTY have all appeared on the New York Times Extended Bestseller List.
All of the books in the series will be published in German, Japanese, and Croatian editions, as well as on audiotape (in English) and in large print editions.
Inspiration for the escapades of Ann's much-loved character, Miss Julia, comes in all manner of ways -- a chance remark by a friend or family member, an incident she happens to see, in a dream, or by being reminded of something in her past experiences. It is always deeply satisfying to her when scenes in the book she is working on suddenly seem to fit together to make a good story. She does not outline or make detailed plans before starting a story. She does, however, have a general plot in mind before beginning to write, but this usually entails only the conflict and the final resolution, with few ideas of how they will be worked out. So, with just the beginning and the end of a book decided on, Ann relies on the characters themselves to fill in the middle with first one subplot after another. This, she says, is the joy of writing -- when a character suddenly does or says something unexpectedly, leading her to funny and surprising 'mini-scenes' that seem to delight readers.
Ann was once asked by an interviewer how she knew when something she'd written was good. She replied, "I know it's good when I fall off my chair laughing." From that response, we can be sure that she enjoys writing about her characters as much as we enjoy reading about them.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024She’s done it again! Ann B. Ross has offered up another thrilling, seat edging adventure for Miss Julia. I loved the incorporation of Etta Mae and learning more about her character. This one will be forever one of my favorites. I just wish someone would make a television series from it. We so need a new, good, wholesome mystery series in the line of “Murder She Wrote.” This one is it! Thanks Ann
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2007Miss Julia's jewelry is stolen while Sam (her husband) is away in Russia. Following a dubious-sounding lead by a local sheriff, she withdraws Lloyd from school and drives to Florida where she hires a private investigator to help her locate the thieves. Unfortunately, the PI is an alcoholic, and is more than Miss Julia can handle so she sends for acquaintance Etta Mae Wiggins to assist her. Together the four team up to find Miss Julia's property.
This was a light, entertaining audio. The plot was a little more fantastic than normal... (It reminded me of a Lucille Ball episode). Thankfully there was no Sam in this one. Sam's not a bad character, but he cramps Miss Julia's style. I liked Etta Mae, and Lloyd.... I was disappointed to see less of Lillian. I was lukewarm about Mr. Tuttle. I was a bit fed up with his alcoholism towards the end. Plus, he was so under-developed as a character, we never really understood why he drank, or what his real trouble was. 4 stars. Light amusing non-serious stuff.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2021There are times I just want to haul off and bop Miss Julia (Mrs. Sam Murdoch) for being bossy, condescending, stubborn and short-sighted…but then I wind up laughing because she’s exactly those things and still manages to untangle herself from sticky situations. This novel was no exception - if I had been Mr. Tuttle, the private detective she so relentlessly bosses around while searching for the jewelry stolen from her, I would have told her - in no uncertain terms - to get lost. But, fortunately for us readers, Mr. Tuttle just grumbles and gets on with things.
In this novel, Miss Julia’s most prized and beloved possessions - her engagement and wedding rings - are stolen early on in the novel, prompting her and Little Loyd and Etta Mae Wiggins to track down the thieves and recover the loot.
Ann B. Ross’s characters are at once familiar (we’ve all known a Miss Julia, I suspect) and enjoyable (even when you want to bop Miss Julia). Ms. Ross has the knack of drawing the reader in and becoming a part of Miss Julia’s antics.
All in all, a fun read. Well done, Miss Julia! And thank you, Ann B. Ross, for lifting my spirits whenever I follow wherever you and Miss Julia decide to lead me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024It’s a long series and I love it. I listen when I walk each morning and it’s become like a 2nd family. I love the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2024Miss Julia is at it again, but this time was her most dangerous mission yet—recovering jewels stolen from her, Hazel Marie and her friend. This time, Miss Julia and Lloyd drive all the way to Florida to hire Mr. Picken’s friend, Frank Tuttle. Unfortunately, Mr. Tuttle was in no condition to help anyone, so Miss Julia takes him in hand and sets him on the road to sobriety so he can help them (including Etta Mae Wiggins who Miss Julia summoned for help) find the thieves and recover the goods.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2013I really enjoy Miss Julia books for so many reasons. Writing style is witty and engaging, locale is so familiar to us who love visiting Hendersonville, plot definition is always spot on. The area is so familiar to lovers of Hendersonvillian Ann B. Ross' home town and the beautiful Asheville, NC area. Although the setting is not identified as Hendersonville those who frequent the area can readily identify the thriving, happy, friendly small town and feel we know about where Miss Julia lives, goes to church, and shops. This book is my least favorite book so I will award it only five stars rather than the 10 that all of her other books deserve. C'mon, Amazon. Let us have a plus star for other books by Ann B Ross.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Julia Strikes again!
Well, she strikes back according to the title, but she's always busybodying out there, solving some crime or other, and trying to straighten out people's lives. Here she gets involved with some missing jewellery (and of course, some of this is hers or she wouldn't bother) and a drunken private detective, who I expect will turn up again in a later book. Ann B Ross has managed to create a character like the English Agatha Raisin but with better manners. I like her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
This, for me, is the best Miss Julia yet ( I am working through the series ). There is a new, drunken, detective on the scene and Ross and we have a lot of fun with this character. Ludicrous plotline of actually retrieving stolen goods right across America, just adds to the comedy. Thankyou Ann B. Ross!
