The Bounty Hunter Takes A Bride (The Lawmen of Harker's Hell Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

Early settlers shaped and molded a new planet into what they dreamed would be a western heaven. Instead, they created a hellish version of the Old West.

Welcome to Harker's Hell….

Dissonance Walker believed she’d escaped the worst life had to offer, only to find her troubles have just begun. On the run from the dangerous organization whose malicious experiment left a ticking time bomb in her head, she makes a beeline for the dusty frontier town of Chimera and the Badlands that surround it. She believes the key to saving her life is hidden in that harsh expanse of desert… but a relentless bounty hunter determined to discover her most dangerous secret stands in her way.

Who would have ever thought they’d be forced to marry? Or that he might turn out to be her only chance at finding the key?

Bram Spencer sure as hell doesn’t want a wife, let alone one that thinks he’s some kind of hero. He’s an almost-ex-bounty-hunter with too much blood on his hands. He’d gladly pick his teeth with the bones of his enemies. So why does he keep trying to live up to the expectations set by this tiny slip of a woman? And why does he have a bad feeling that the secrets she holds in her eyes will lead to nothing but trouble?

See, this is why he never plays the hero—no good deed goes unpunished.

Alvania Scarborough does it again! I've been following this author for many years, and if there is one thing she does, it's completely immerse the reader in a totally new world. Take a sexy hero, a headstrong fearless heroine, and a dangerous world where nothing is what it appears to be, and you have Alvania's new book Disobedience. Plot twists, steamy love scenes that actually progress the storyline, and good guys that make you want to be bad all add up to one of the best books I've read this year. She's definitely in my top five favorite authors, and this new book proves once again why. Do yourself a favor and grab Disobedience for yourself today!

I had no idea when I agreed to review this that it was a futuristic story. This story is part western, part sci-fi, all romance. The author has created this settlement where anything is possible and the strength of the characters take this story to the next level.

I honestly didn’t get that the settlers of the Hanker’s Hell decided to re-create the old west and live it until Dissonance‘s story and condition was revealed. There were experiments taking place to people who were sold into slavery and as a result, she can’t say no to an order. The beginning of this story finds her being sold to the highest bidder. Enter Bram, our hero, who decides to buy her and set her free. The law dictates that the only way she will truly be free is to become a wife, his wife. They have sexy chemistry, so he marries her and sets out to tame her. She doesn’t tell him about her unique condition, or the horrific life before that. So their lives are a little uncomfortable for her. When trouble comes to Bram’s estate, he and Dis stand together to face it and their future together.

The good: At the beginning of every chapter, we get a snippet of Harker Shand Delias’ journal. Harker is one of the original settlers and his story is really intriguing. There are people disappearing and Harker is trying to figure it out. When we are given Dis’ story we get a better idea of what this world is capable of. More importantly this story is a romance. When Bram finds people are out to ruin him and his wife’s life her gets really chivalrous. Bram’s job as a bounty hunter makes him a bad a**. I loved that about him. Bram’s drive to keep Dis safe and happy made this story a swoon worthy romance.

The bad: With everything going on in this story, it is hard to make sense of the genres. It is a western, and then it is sci-fi, too. I hated the characters living this “simple” lifestyle when there seemed more advance technology at work in this world. This didn’t really work for me at first. Also, why doesn’t she just tell him her condition. She struggles unnecessarily because she is stubborn. Gah!

I loved this as a romance. I have to admit that the genre confusion wasn’t keeping me from enjoying the story, at all. The author is able to somehow make this work and by the end I could understand why they chose to live like that. Bram and Dis have very good chemistry and their sex scenes were very hot. When we see the lengths Bram goes to for Dis, even in all her stubbornness, this romance really got me. All the elements come together to make this one hell of a story.

Bram and Dissonance must trust each other if they want to survive a shocking evil, but trust is hard to come by on the frontier in this thrilling fantasy romance. The author has created an old west setting seamlessly blended with futuristic elements that is fascinating and has some intriguing and refreshingly different elements that grab the reader’s attention and doesn’t let go. I was completely caught up in this entertaining tale from the very beginning and I must say that I fell in love with the intriguing and charming characters, so I can’t wait to read the next story in this unusual and engaging new world.

This is a great story. Part Western, part Sci-Fi, part romance and all adventure!

I loved the people in this book. Witty dialog, strong personalities and heartfelt emotions radiated from each of the main characters. Even the bad guys/gals, though not quite as well defined, were out there enough for me to recognize (and detest) their motivations. I also appreciated how the author worked the history of the settlement of Harker's Hell into the beginning of each chapter.

My personal rating is 4.5 stars, withholding that last half a star only because there is a plot line that is not fully resolved in the first book of the series. But since this is a personal preference, the visual rating will be five stars, as I hope others will see this and decide to pick up Disobedience!
