MSI won’t cover the RMA because of the use of the CableMod 12VHPWR power adapter.

The never-ending saga with 12VHPWR cable problems continues. CableMod introduced an angled adapter as an alternative to the standard 12+4 (16-pin) cable for the new GeForce RTX 40 series, aiming to provide users with a sleeker and more manageable option. Strict NVIDIA’s guidelines prompted many users to adhere to these recommendations with even more attention. One of the key guidelines was to ensure enough space for cable bending, which proved challenging with wide desktop RTX 40 GPUs.
Some users resorted to opening their cases to accommodate the necessary space, while CableMod teased the upcoming release of angled power adapters. These adapters eventually became available, solving the biggest issue with the new power cables. At this moment, there are many adapters and cables are now available from many brands, offering gamers a variety of choices, including cables with angled connectors that don’t require an additional adapter.

Unfortunately, CableMod adapter users have reported cases of melting, with YouTuber JayzTwoCents even describing them as a “daily occurrence” in his videos a few weeks ago. Consequently, the company issued a statement and a new recommendation in response to these concerns.
While acknowledging that the failure rate of their adapters is low, CableMod recognizes that it still occurs more frequently than with their regular cables, both using the 12VHPWR design. As a precautionary measure, users who feel anxious about using these adapters are advised to discontinue their use and wait for the release of an improved version labeled 1.1.
Meanwhile, users who had similar, unpleasant experiences with their GPU, such as connectors or adapters melting, are now trying to get a refund to whoever is responsible. It appears that MSI is not going to cover the cost of a broken GPU due to the use of CableMod adapters. The company is rejecting users RMA claims who admit to using such connectors.

An email from MSI was shared by one of the users, where the company claims that there is an ongoing issue with CableMod adapter. The user is advised to contact the manufacturer of the adapter, rather than MSI, regarding possible reimbursement.
Luckily, CableMod is not burying its head in the sand, and the company has already stepped in to offer a full refund to the user. Nevertheless, users who would rather not avoid involving multiple parties in their possible GPU RMA claims should probably stick to the original adapter cable as supplied by the card maker.
