Cops taking serious view of death threats against lawyer Nik Elin, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are not taking the death threats made against lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid lightly.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said five police reports have been received over the death threats.

"One (report) was lodged in Jinjang while four others were lodged in Sri Hartamas.

"Those who make threats (will face the consequences)," he told reporters after visiting the General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade headquarters in Cheras on Friday (Feb 16).

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Bukit Aman Logistics Department director Datuk Seri Sahabudin Abd Manan also attended the visit.

It was reported two days ago that police had identified the owners of three social media accounts believed to be linked to death threats against the lawyer.

City police said this development was the result of collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Nik Elin and her daughter, Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman, had filed a constitutional challenge on May 25 against 18 provisions under Kelantan’s syariah criminal code.

The challenge, under Article 4(4) of the Federal Constitution, named the Kelantan state government as the sole respondent.

Last week, the Federal Court ruled in an 8-1 decision that 16 of the 18 provisions were unconstitutional as the offences were already covered by federal laws.

In a recent podcast, the lawyer claimed that she lodged three police reports after receiving death threats.

Sinar Harian had quoted Nik Elin as saying that it was important for the people to read every provision in order to better understand the law.
