Surveillance for Public Health Course

Course Dates   April 19-23, 2021 (due to COVID-19, this course will be taught online)

Cost   Registration Fee: $850 for 1 registrant, $800 each for 2 registrants, $750 each for 3 registrants, $700 each for 4 registrants, $650 each for 5+ registrants

  • This intensive course includes:
  • History of Public Health Surveillance and Past Pandemics
  • Overview of PHS with a focus on Emerging Infections
  • Considerations in planning Public Health Surveillance
  • Sources and collection of data for Public Health Surveillance
  • Data science and its role in Surveillance in Public Health
  • Analysis and Interpretation of Surveillance data including pittfalls during Pandemics
  • Communicating PHS data
  • Ethics and legal issues in Public Health Surveillance
  • State and Local issues in Public Health Surveillance
  • The Emerging Role of Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Surveillance
  • Evaluating PHS data/systems
  • Special topics in Public Health Surveillance (PHS):
  • Corona (SARS, MERS, COVID) Virus Surveillance
  • Predicting Morbidity and Mortality during Public Health Disasters
  • Syndromic surveillance
  • Molecular Surveillance
  • Importance of International Health Regulations during Public Health Emergencies and Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention and use of PPE during Pandemics
  • Hands-on table top PHS case study exercises:
  • Epidemiologic response to Hurricane
  • NY City Surveillance
  • Development of Surveillance Systems


    Please note: Interpretation services for language and disability impairements are not available for these short programs

    Prerequisites


    There is no pre-requisites required however, it is recommended that participants have completed an introductory epidemiology course, such as the Emory University/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention two-week course, Epidemiology in Action or four week International Course in Applied Epidemiology. CDC offers a self-study course, Principles of Epidemiology which would provide the requisite background information. Participants should also have some practical experience in public health and professional responsibilities for surveillance activities.
