Jason Kidd leading candidate to become Brooklyn Nets coach
Jason Kidd has emerged as the strong frontrunner to become the Brooklyn Nets head coach and could be hired before the end of the week, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Nets ownership has told league associates that it wants a "fresh face," as coach, and the hiring of Kidd would give them a star quality that comes with significant risk for a franchise with a mandate to compete for championships in the short term.
Talks on a possible contract for Kidd are under way, sources said.
Nets general manager Billy King is still planning a formal interview with Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw on Wednesday in New York. Shaw is meeting with Clippers officials on Tuesday.
Kidd is targeting former Detroit Pistons and Nets coach Lawrence Frank and the well-respected Tim Grgurich to be part of his coaching staff, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Kidd wants Frank to serve as his top assistant coach and Grgurich to also have a significant role on his bench. Frank is owed more than $3 million in the next two years as part of his buyout with the Pistons, and Grgurich spent only a part of the past season as a consultant with George Karl and the Denver Nuggets.
Frank and Grgurich are two of the most pursued assistant coaching candidates on the market.
