cmd redirect to nul

I am having problems with redirection to nul from the cmd
prompt.

i.e

dir >nul
The system cannot find the file specified.

From a 4nt prompt you can see that the file that cannot
be found is nul.

dir >out.out works fine.

Any idea what would be missing?

include the component 'software\system\other\null device driver'
