Statement by United States medical students committed to the integrity of the medical profession

As privileged medical students and future health care leaders in the United States, it is our responsibility to denounce and call for an end to the ongoing and escalating violence against the Palestinian civilian population that is being perpetrated by the state of Israel and funded by the United States. The oaths that many of us took with reverence during our white coat ceremonies compel us to “uphold the integrity of the medical profession” and to "hold all life dear." These oaths do not selectively apply on the basis of race, ethnicity, or religion. That is, on principle, our commitment to the sanctity and preservation of human life necessitates that we do not remain silent when we witness the devastating wholesale murder of a population, collective punishment, and indiscriminate violent targeting of hospitals and healing spaces.

The death toll in Palestine is rapidly rising. More than 11,000 people have already died in Gaza, including more than 4,000 children. In the West Bank, nearly 200 people have been killed due to ongoing violence. This avoidable loss of human life comes in the context of more than 6,000 Palestinians killed by the state of Israel since 2008, prior to the October 7th attack by Hamas. There are multiple aspects of the ongoing violence that are especially pertinent to our identities as physician trainees. For example, the state of Israel has been targeting hospitals and ambulances with intense airstrikes, killing injured Palestinians and those seeking refuge from airstrikes. Currently, humanitarian aid entering Gaza is but a small fraction of the aid that was previously entering Gaza before these acts of aggression began, and most of this aid is not reaching northern Gaza, where there is a disproportionate need for urgent humanitarian aid. The state of Israel has been using white phosphorus chemical weapons in civilian-populated areas of Lebanon and Gaza. The state of Israel has bombed multiple refugee camps, including the largest refugee camp in Gaza. Although the state of Israel claims to have given fair and timely warnings to Palestinians to evacuate to southern Gaza, there have been many substantiated reports of civilians being bombed en route to southern Gaza.

As physician trainees, we have an imperative to steward human life. We are witnessing, alongside the rest of the world, the unacceptable escalation of violence against hospitals and health care workers as targets of violence by the state of Israel. This violence directly transgresses upon international protections that safeguard the safety, security, and sacredness of the medical profession. Since the night of November 10th, hospitals in northern Gaza have been under siege. Al Shifa hospital, which was previously sheltering 15,000 civilians, lost power overnight due to withholding of electricity and fuel by the state of Israel. Patients have already died, including babies in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, and many others are at high risk for imminent death, including patients in need of ventilator support. Other hospitals in northern Gaza, including Rantisi Children’s Hospital, have been under active bombardment, leaving patients to choose between fending for themselves in the streets or remaining inside. Some of our fellow physicians and colleagues have remained behind, choosing to attend to their duties with integrity and courage.

We are writing this statement because our medical schools have been overwhelmingly silent in the face of these blatant attacks on the sanctity of human life and the sacredness of the medical profession. This asymmetry becomes more evident given that many of our institutions have condemned the October 7th attack by Hamas, which caused the unacceptable deaths of more than 1,000 civilians. As medical students and future health care leaders, we mourn the loss of all life, and we refuse to remain complicit when silence implies that some lives are worth more than others.

Finally, we would like to note that these violations of international humanitarian law and the targeting of health care workers and health care infrastructure is not new. The state of Israel has bombed hospitals in the past and will continue to do so without external pressure. Most recently, at least 100 Israeli physicians have signed a petition urging the state of Israel to continue bombing hospitals in Gaza. We decry the betrayal of the Hippocratic Oath by any physicians who implicitly or explicitly call for the targeting of hospitals, ambulances, health care workers, and civilians. Failure to act now is to betray the oaths we took when we committed ourselves to the field of medicine and to be complicit in the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. We echo the Palestinian health care workers of Gaza, who remain steadfast as ambassadors of peace and stewards of human life.

Addressing the silence of medical institutions in the United States

Our medical institutions’ silence has been disappointing and harmful for two important reasons.

Their silence indicates an abandonment of the responsibility to hold all life dear, to cultivate peace in both our personal conduct and political expression, and to uphold the integrity of the medical profession. (Each of these clauses is excerpted directly from the oath taken by students during the white coat ceremony of one of the top medical schools in the country.)

Their silence creates material harm and unsafe learning environments for minoritized trainees. Specifically, their silence perpetuates racist and Islamophobic environments that allow for hate crimes as well as academic and professional retaliation against trainees who choose to speak up against the abhorrent violence committed by the state of Israel.

We remain hopeful that our institutions will re-align themselves with the practice of medicine and its sacred tenets by:

Calling for the protection of innocent life. As a coalition of medical students, we ask that our medical institutions join us in calling for the following in public-facing statements:

An immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. In particular, there must be an end to the targeting of health care workers, health care workers’ families, health care infrastructure, and ambulances.
The immediate restoration of electricity, water, food, fuel, and opening of the Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
An end to the siege on Gaza and an end to the more than half-century of occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.

Ensuring protection of freedom of expression. As a coalition of medical students, we ask that our medical institutions protect the academic freedom of their students, staff, and faculty by publicly communicating a strong anti-doxxing stance. We also ask that our medical institutions condemn the harmful rhetoric equating critiques of the state of Israel and Zionist ideologies to anti-Semitic stances. We strongly believe that these protections will create safer, more welcoming environments for Arab, Jewish, and Muslim members of our communities.

Committing to accountability for dangerous and short-sighted prior actions. Multiple leading medical journals and medical institutions have, to date, already engaged in actions that seek to justify or legitimize violence and murder against civilians, health care workers, health care infrastructure, and ambulances. We seek accountability for these actions and ask that these entities, which purportedly represent the medical profession as a whole, re-align themselves with the principles that we, as stewards of the sanctity of human life, took oaths to uphold. This includes, but is not limited to:

The retraction of the recent article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association titled “Health Professionals and War in the Middle East.” We join more than 10,000 medical and health science professionals who are calling for this retraction.
The full and respectful reconsideration of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza that was brought to the American Medical Association’s national meeting on November 11. We seek accountability for the American Medical Association’s coordinated efforts to suppress this resolution by not allowing delegates their full allotted time to speak about the resolution.
