Missing 05:05
there's far too much missing now--I feel like a suit with an empty trust account who used to have it all. I used to it all; now it's all gone. I open up my eyes and now i'm back to bed, but when I sleep you're all I dream; should I stay awake instead? And you'd think by now I'd know how to come bouncing back. And you'd think I'd know that sometimes there ain't no need to react when it's gone--regardless of what I want. Some things can't last and sometimes we can't hold on, but that don't mean we ain't strong. So tell me what do we do now? Build it up so we can just knock it right back down? It's too late to go back and it's too late to stay, but could we have found the answer without the mistake? But since it's gone I can't pay it too much thought. I know now what I want and when I find that, I'm gonna FIGHT LIKE HELL to hold on.

To Be Alone 03:08
I had time but I hadn't any love. My thoughts they were my own and my heart belonged to no one. Then you came along And brought with you some love. And I forgot what it was to be alone. So when you moved away--You said, 'to find your place'-- I couldn't hear more than 'There ain't no room for you.' And so it was and there I was and do we inevitably always end back at one? Is it how we learn? Is it how I know that to be alone is to be strong? To be strong. Now I got time but I ain't got no love. My thoughts are still with you and I haven't been able to breathe in so long. But someday another will come and bring with her sweet love and I'll forget what it is to be alone.

about

Upon graduating university in 2003, Mathew Snow moved to Akron, OH where a small yet potent Blues music scene (consisting of Mike Lenz, Patrick Sweany and of course, the Black Keys) reignited his desire to write songs. After a few years of practice, a move to New York City, and the end of a relationship, he began writing what would eventually become the 11 song debut: Mathew Snow & the Way It Was.

"The record is basically the sound of me trying to make sense of the emotions I felt during and after a breakup, which I know has been done 3 million times over but it was my way of overcoming the disappointment. It helped me acknowledge what happened and why it happened and to look ahead to new possibilities--which is why I decided to call the record '...the Way It Was."

To go along with its title, Snow wanted the record to echo the sounds of Rock, Blues, Funk & Soul music from the 60's and 70's - periods from which he cites many influences. In order to achieve this, he and 3 friends (3 HUGELY talented musicians - Marc LaGana, Josh Moyer and Greg Trenouth) worked with Travis Harrison, president of Serious Business Records, tracking the crux of the record live onto 2" tape in less than 20 hours, and mixing with predominantly analog outboard gear. The result is a funky, sometimes angry, sometimes sorrowful 38-minute record of raw Blues Rock with a touch of soul.
