Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As 6th graders, my students are mostly 11 and 12 year olds that are bridging the gap between elementary school and secondary. They can be both scared and excited and tend to be full of energy and enthusiasm. They are inquisitive, funny and their curiosity is inspiring.
My students are at a critical age where they are transitioning from a child to a young adult.
In this stage, they are cementing their opinions on their potential in math and their overall enjoyment of the subject matter. I have found that if students enjoy the material and find it to be fun they are much more likely to struggle through even when it gets hard. Many of my students come from culturally diverse backgrounds. Our community has been struggling in the recent years with an upswing of crime and poverty. Nonetheless, my students are bright, motivated and contain so much untapped potential that I hope to engage. They truly are remarkable kids and I find it such a privilege to work with them.
My Project
Why does math matter? As a middle school math teacher, the most common questions I get from my students are "Why do we have to learn this? When will it ever matter?" I find it so sad that some students as young as incoming 6th graders have already given up on math and I plan to work diligently to make math fun and exciting. I want my students to understand that math is vital to all other subjects and highly important in their life. I also want them to experience success and joy in math. These supplies will provide opportunities for hands on math practice and collaborative activities. They will make math class fun and exciting. In 6th grade we study statistics and probability and I look forward to using the Tenzi number cubes to engage my students in exciting game play practice. Students will see how statistics works in the real world and make predictions based on their growing understanding of probability. Legos are one of the most useful manipulatives to teach fractions and geometry principles.
Finally, the whiteboards and Post-it pads will be used for group work and tutorials where students will work through challenging math problems in their groups.
These supplies will be integral in creating a fun and exciting environment where my students will want to learn math. Research has shown that students learn what they want to learn--hello Pokemon. I want to inspire them to pursue math.
