Gov. Bob Riley announced Tuesday that the

Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site

will be honored on a new commemorative quarter being issued by the

United States Mint

.

Beginning in 2010, the United States Mint will issue quarters featuring national parks and other national sites from each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and each U.S. territory under its "America the Beautiful" quarters program.

Riley's office, in a press release, said the governor was notified Tuesday morning that Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar approved the recommendation.

Artists at the U.S. Mint will prepare three to five designs for the commemorative quarter. The designs will be reviewed for historical accuracy, authenticity and overall composition to ensure that they appropriately represent the site, according to a letter sent to Riley from Edmund C. Moy, director of the U.S. Mint.
