Why this petition matters

Started by National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery

As people in recovery from serious mental health conditions (who have diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression), we – as well as family members, mental health professionals, advocates, and other supporters – are concerned about proposals in Congress to slash health funding, which would reduce access to community-based mental health programs vital to our well-being and recovery.

Federally funded mental health recovery programs (such as the Statewide Consumer Network Grants and the National Consumer and Consumer Supporter Technical Assistance Centers) help us to recover health, hope and independence. They support mental health consumer organizations that provide peer support, teach recovery skills and give consumers a voice in their mental health system.

The Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness (PAIMI) program, through the use of legal advocacy strategies, protects the human and civil rights of people with serious mental health conditions. The PAIMI program protects children and adults from abuse and neglect, while ensuring they have access to the community-based services and supports that they need to live and work independently.

Join us today in telling Congress to fully fund, and ensure access to, mental health recovery programs and the Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness program. The petition will be hand-delivered with a list of the names of people that signed it.

Sponsored by: The National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery, the National Disability Rights Network
