Super Boat Weekend: The raced dubbed "NASCAR on the water" returns. Some of the wildest, fastest offshore power boats in the world will be in Clearwater this weekend for the annual Bright House Clearwater Super Boat National Championships with boats that can reach speeds of 180 mph. Coachman Park will serve as Baystar Race Village, and there will be a parade of boats at 6 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of Cleveland Street ending at the park. Afterward, meet drivers and crews and get their autographs. On Saturday there will be a Super Boat celebration at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach followed by fireworks after sunset. The big race takes place Sunday with two heats, at noon and 2 p.m. It's free to watch from the beach, or you can buy a ticket to watch from Pier 60 that day for $5 and $20.

Overboard: In a cheeky tip of a captain's hat to the Super Boat celebration in nearby Coachman Park, the Capitol Theatre on Friday will have a $1 showing of Overboard, the Goldie Hawn comedy from 1987 about a snooty debutante who loses her memory after falling off her luxury yacht into Kurt Russell's beefy working class arms. The movie starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., Clearwater. (727) 791-7400.

Wordier than Thou: This open mic series that focuses on storytelling puts a twist on its mission Wednesday in a night entitled "Doomsayers: Local Authors Predict The End Of The World." John Henry Fleming, Jeff Strand, Heather Jones, Cole Bellamy, Lynne Hansen, Juliana A. Torres and more tell what kind of demise they think is in store for the world. It starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Studio@620, 620 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg. (727) 895-6620. Price. $5.

Tangerine Blues Fest: The free-living spirit of Gulfport comes out in force with headliners including Little Mike and the Tornadoes (pictured at right), Betty Fox Band, 33 Years and Grayson Rogers Band. Also, there will be arts, crafts, food and drink vendors and a children's fun area. Proceeds from concessions benefit All Children's Hospital. It's free and it runs from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Tangerine Greenway, 5022 Tangerine Ave. S, Gulfport.

PNC Bank Concert Artist Series: The fourth season for this University of Tampa series will kick off Sunday with the works of Mozart featuring UT faculty and an orchestra of some of the area's best professional musicians. In the spotlight will be Grigorios Zamparas on piano, Ted Decorso on clarinet and soprano Hein Jung. It starts at 2 p.m. at University of Tampa Sykes Chapel, 401 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. Free. (813) 253-3333.
