Taap is a very essential part of Jainism. Tapascharya is the practice of sacrificing bodily pleasures and comforts to gain spiritual ends; and to turn away all sins by means of the body. Many pious and devout Jains perform various Taaps especially during the days of Paryushan.
Anshan (not eating and drinking) is the first of the Bahiya Taaps. In anshan, one can do an ekasana, aayambil, upvas, atham, athai etc. depending on how many days you are fasting. It is control over the sense of taste.
