Fatal Exception
« on: August 30, 2004, 04:09:42 PM »
Hi, I'm running 4.1 Home Edition on a Pentium III 666,
382 MB ram, win98SE.
I leave the computer on most of the time, and now and again (without being connected to the internet) I suddenly get the dreaded blue screen. The text reads: A Fatal Exception OE has occurred at 0028: C1442BAE in VXD VTDI(01) + 0000024E.
I think it's avast! related because it's only happening since installing avast!, and when I press a key to get back to windows, the avast! icons in the systray disappear. Your help would be appreciated Regards, PDF.

Did you try to uninstall/install avast again? Or, at least, repair your installation (Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast > repair function)?

Are your system updated?
The trouble is related to Outlook Express, do you use any other email program?

Do you have a file called vtdi.386 in any other folder than x:\windows\system?

Many thanks for your replies.
vtdi.386 is only in my windows\system folder.
I used the repair function, so I'm hoping that's fixed the problem. Time will tell.
Yes, my system is pretty much updated.
I don't use Outlook Express, I use Netscape 7 for e-mail.
Thanks for your feedback so far, PDF.

When I used win98 some considerable time ago, when you get a fatal exception, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what has caused it and for most occasions a poor use of time trying to identify, just reboot.

The initial report would appear to be related to OE and when OE is closed down/crashed, the fatal exception usually works it way through each of the other programs in the system tray until eventually the complete taskbar disappears.

Often these crashes occure because system resources get so low that programs can't work and the system crashes.
