| Lt. Gov. Mayann Francis greets Merchant Navy veterans aboard the HMCS Sackville as it arrived on the Bedford waterfront for the dedication of a new monument. |

They sailed alongside the navy, transporting goods and material deemed essential to the war effort.
But for decades following the Second World War, the dedication and sacrifices of members of Canada's Merchant Navy went unrecognized.
"The navy was there to sink the (enemy) subs trying to sink us. We were the sitting ducks creeping slowly across the Northern Atlantic. And we were creeping at 20 kilometres an hour," recalled Merchant Navy veteran Angus McDonald. (more)

37 candidates vie for eight school board seats - Halifax West
Nearly two years after Education Minister Karen Casey disbanded an unruly Halifax Regional School Board, 37 candidates have their work cut out for them in preparing for the Oct. 18 election.
Former civil servant Howard Windsor was appointed by Education Minister Karen Casey in December 2006 to take over the 13-person board, which was disbanded when it couldn't work together. Since then, the school board has reduced its number of electoral districts from 12 to eight, plus its African-Nova Scotian member. (more)

Thieves in HRM show how low they'll go - Rick Howe (Howe Now)
I had to shake my head when I heard the other day about a favourite target of thieves over the course of this summer. How low will some of these degenerates go? Some of the inconsiderate among us have taken to stealing from metro Halifax's organizations that help with the less fortunate. They are stealing from charities.
Apparently not content with the selection of cheap clothing available at Frenchy's or Value Village, a few bargain hunters are looking to add to their wardrobe without paying a cent. They've been stealing from the clothes donation bins left at points around the Halifax Regional Municipality by the Salvation Army and Big Brothers Big Sisters. (more)

Asking for common courtesy
To the editor;
I am the mother of a special needs little girl attending Caldwell Road School in Cole Harbour. My daughter has been going there since Grade Primary. She is now in Grade 6.
I am trying to open people's eyes and minds to our plight.
I live out of the area, so I take my daughter to school every day in a wheelchair accessible van with a ramp. My problem is not that there isn't any handicap parking, there are two spots. My problem is that everyone uses them. (more)
