  • departure. With brief introduction by the photographer. Michael Stevenson Contemporary/Bell-Roberts Publishing, South Africa, 2003. 40 pp. Quarto (11.5 x 11.5 in./29 x 29 cm). First edition. SIGNED on title page. Black-and-white reproductions.

    Very Fine.

These forty images are drawn from the photographs Tillim has taken, mostly in Africa, over the past fifteen years. Many of these images were taken in the course of photojournalism and, although they are often of harsh realities, they are seldom invasive or confrontational. In these images Tillim looks at situations from the side, as a passive but empathetic spectator, and seeks an unusual yet humane moment to provide a lingering disquiet.

Leopold and Mobutu. Text by Adam Hochschild. Filigranes Editions, Tregueux, France, 2004. Unpaged. Tall quarto 12.5 x 9.25 in./32 x 23.5 cm) First edition. SIGNED on title page. Stiff photo-illustrated wrappers. Color and black-and-white reproductions.
    Fine.

Jo'burg. Filigranes Editions/STE Publishers, South Africa, 2005. 126 pp. Octavo (small size). First edition. SIGNED on title page. Hardbound. Photo-illustrated boards. No jacket as issued. Color reproductions, bound accordion style.
Near Fine+; tiny area of abrasion, rear cover (.5 in) with a trace of wear to 'tips'.

"In the Jo'burg series Guy Tillim considers the private lives of the residents of inner-city Johannesburg, the often-forgotten subjects of the decay and renewal of a city undergoing radical transformation. The series, produced with the support of Tillim's DaimlerChrysler award for South African Photography in 2004, went on to win him the Leica Oskar Barnack Award for photojournalism in July 2005. With its concertina binding, the book is a beautiful art object in its own right."--the publisher

Petros Village. Punctum Press, 2006. 60 pp. Small quarto (6.25 x 8.5 in./16 x 21 cm). First edition. SIGNED on title page. Hardbound with photo-illustrated boards. No jacket as issued. Color reproductions, bound accordion style.
Fine-; with slight nick at base of spine.

"Petros Village is situated in central Malawi, about 50 kilometres north of the capital Lilongwe. Rural, but not remote, its inhabitants rely on a local market to sell tobacco and beans for cash, and grow maize as a staple food.
The village takes its name from its chief, Petros James. In accordance with Chewa law he inherited the chieftainship not from his father, but from his uncle, his mother’s brother. The son of his sister Neri will inherit the title from Petros and take his name, just as Petros did from his uncle. BR> In February 2006, South Africa photographer Guy Tillim met Petros, who immediately invited him to spend a week on his farm, giving up his own bedroom for his guest.
And it is precisely this that pervades the pictures that Tillim took during that week: a sacred sense of warm hospitality, which is first and foremost generosity of spirit, unthinkable in city life."--the publisher

Avenue Patrice Lumumba. Texts by the photographer & Robert Gardner. Prestel/Peabody Museum, 2008. 128 pp. Large quarto (9.5 x 13.5 in./24.5 x 34 cm). First edition. SIGNED on title page. Hardbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. Color reproductions.
Fine in Fine- jacket with just a bit of edge wear.

"In this book [Tillim] focuses on the structures that dot the urban landscape of these troubled countries. The eighty images in this book from Angola, Mozambique, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo reveal modern buildings constructed with illusions of prosperity and peace and then left to decay. This collection reflects the intuitive brilliance that is Guy Tillim's hallmark, tells Africa's story of failure and atrophy, and points to the intersection of present-day Africa with its colonial past in countries that were forsaken in the name of progress and the perpetual quest for power. "--the publisher

Roma, Citta Di Mezzo. Afterword by Nicola-Louise Brandt. Punctum Press, 2009. Small quarto (6.75 x 9 in.) First edition. SIGNED on title page. Hardbound with photo-illustrated boards. No jacket as issued. Color reproductions, bound accordion style.
Fine with slight imperfection to crown of spine.

"Guy Tillim's images of Rome are of silent, transient moments that blink between one articulated thought and another. Tillum does not memorialize or claim a sentimental intimacy with his surroundings. He investigates cycles of decay and regeneration in the city with the candour of an outsider and, in the process, he offers another way of feeling and thinking about archetypal and contemporary Rome."- from the afterword by Nicola-Louise Brandt
