Dangerous Territory (Alpha Ops Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 176 ratings

A SEXY STRANGER
Flirting with danger is reporter Grace Grainger's modus operandi. But she's learned the hard way not to grow attached to the soldiers she's embedded with in Afghanistan. To escape from her pain and loneliness, she fantasizes about the hot night she spent with a gorgeous stranger three years before in D.C. Grace never thought she'd see him again-let alone need him to rescue her . . .
AN EXPLOSIVE NIGHT
Air Force Master Sergeant Josh Travers knows journalists are nothing but trouble. So when he has to risk the lives of his team to save some reporter who's been separated from her patrol, he's not happy-until he recognizes her stunning eyes and delicious curves. Josh has never wanted a woman like he wants Grace. Even in an Afghan cave with a sandstorm and enemy troops closing in, he can't deny the desire. This might be the end for both of them-or one hell of a beginning.

Review

"New author and a new series in one of my favorite genres... [t]his little bit of novella goodness has it all and I'm so stinking excited for the next book, I can barely see straight." Straight Shootin' Book Reviews

"For a novella it packs a punch. Hot meets heart felt, action meets angst and if you enjoy military romances with a deeper accompanying storyline, then this is that. Emmy Curtis' writing flows at the perfect pace, is detailed, gripping, passionate and with a couple to love. And with secondary characters paving the way for more, Alpha Ops is a series that holds real promise."

Emmy Curtis is an editor and a romance writer. An ex-pat Brit, she quells her homesickness with Cadbury Flakes and Fray Bentos pies. She's lived in London, Paris and New York, and has settled for the time being, in Germany. When not writing, Emmy loves to travel with her military husband and take long walks with their dogs. All things considered, her life is chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny. And if you get that reference...well, she already considers you kin.

*wipes forehead* You guys! This book! STEAMY! And addicting. (Warning: not YA!)

So so hot. There's a strong possibility that I blushed several times while reading this (and loved every minute!)

I'm a sucker for a strong female character who doesn't just pine after a guy but has her own thing going on, who can hold her own while also falling completely, often hesitantly, in love. And Grace was all that and more. She was relatable and walked that line between independence and softness really, really well.

The tension throughout the book was high, not just between the lead characters, but the circumstances they found themselves in...it's obvious that Mrs. Curtis has done her research, knows the military lingo, and can write a dramatic scene in Afghanistan that has me on the edge of my seat, turning the pages.

Overall--great writing, fast-paced plot, lots of HOT, steamy scenes, and a great story. Can't wait to continue this series!

I picked up Dangerous Territory by Emmy Curtis a few weeks ago and I have not been able to let it go. That tells me, I need to tell you about it. Let's be honest, I liked the premise of the story but that cover is what initially drew me so let's all give thanks for ab-tastic covers with fantastic stories to back them up! Emmy Curtis wrote an amazing story and she packed it all into 100 pages, give or take. Quite honestly, my biggest complaint was that I didn't want this story to end but Grace and Josh's story is an excellent starting point for the Alpha Ops series and brilliantly segues into the next story Over the Line which is due to release in five weeks.

Emmy Curtis describes her series as follows...

"My debut series is about the military heroes who spend most of their professional lives in harm’s way, but rarely get books written about them. They’re not SEALs, and they’re seldom in the headlines, but these men and women are tough, courageous and fearless. They deserve to be written about. And they deserve to find love."

I love that Emmy Curtis brings something slightly different to this military themed genre by exposing the unsung heroes behind the scenes. Remember, when it all goes to hell, it's these bad boys they call in. Explaining the duties or roles of some of these special ops personnel was written into the story with such ease, it only enhanced the story and never weighed it down. Since this story takes place in the middle of a war, I felt all this extra attention to detail and fact, whether it was about the military operation or the interaction between Grace, Josh and the locals, made it that much more authentic. I'm not sure if it's a complement to say that Emmy Curtis writes war scenes extraordinarily well but somewhere out there, these men and women DO exist and I would have to say she did these heroes justice in her fictional portrayal of their very real existence. The imagery is extremely vivid and so well written that without closing your eyes, you can envision the chaos of a patrol under attack, the unforgiving Afghan landscape and the local villagers who are trying to avoid becoming casualties themselves.

Not only are Grace and Josh stranded in Dangerous Territory with the enemy closing in, there is plenty of hostility brewing between them. Josh despises reporters. He is frustrated when his team is put at risk to rescue a journalist and further pissed off to learn that the woman that has starred front and center in all his fantasies ever since their one night stand three years ago also happens to be the reporter he just rescued. Grace is no lightweight. She has spent the last four years embedded in Afghanistan and she has little problem flinging the animosity back at Josh. She is smart and resourceful and this only further fuels his confusion. With the memory of that perfect night now ruined for the both of them and the stress of their current life or death situation hanging over them, emotions in an already volatile situation are going to be pushed to their limit and new memories are about to be made, both in and out of those BDU's.

“Well, soldier, is that a night-vision scope in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?”

The thing you need to realize about Dangerous Territory, going in, is that you won't be able to put it down. So, yes, if you start the book at 10:00 pm on a Tuesday night, you're going to read way past your bedtime, because...hey...c'mon, it's a novella so it's not THAT long, and, besides, you HAVE to know what happens. (I won't give away what happens in the book, but what happens in real life is that Wed. morning arrives just as early as it ever does, and you're going to need an extra cup of coffee to get your draggy butt moving, but you won't even care because the book was so worth it).

And speaking of worth it, I appreciate a 99 cent book as much as the next girl, and I respect that it often means a shorter story. But Dangerous Territory doesn't read like a novella. Curtis packs plenty of action, depth, and plot into the format. She delivers a whole cast of well-drawn, distinct and compelling characters, takes the reader on a sexy thrill ride through Grace and Josh's relationship, and, while she's at it, she also queues up the next book in the series, (Playboy and Beth, I can not wait)!

Dangerous Territory by Emmy Curtis is a great beginning to a new series and author. This is the first time I've read her and will most likely get the rest of the books in the series.

Grace Grainger is staying at the Four Season's hotel near Dulles Airport when she meets Josh and they have a one night stand, they go their separate ways. But Grace is embedded with an Army unit that comes under attack while out on patrol. She's able to get away and hide in the nearby mountain in a cave with hopes that help will soon be coming. But when Air Force Master Sargent Josh Travers is able to find her but the Taliban are close and they need to get to a safe place to call in for a rescue. When he finds out she's a reporter, he immediately assumes that she's one of the tabloid type and you know what they say about never assume, right? They are able to get to a nearby village but there is a price to use their phones, will Josh be able to help the leader's son?

Josh Travers is annoyed to be sent out to rescue a reporter but what he doesn't know is that she's a Pulitzer Price winning reporter and when she's embedded with the units, she tells their story in a way that not one expects. But can they hold off the Taliban so they can be rescued and will Grace move onto a new assignment? She never home enough to have a stable place to live. Can they overcome their differences and realize that what they feel is a forever love?

The book is not long enough to truly flesh out the characters but the story is exciting when it needs to be and sexy and sweet in small doses. If you look for good writing and realistic, thrilling action, this one is a quick read for a weekend. I wouldn't read it again but would read another in the series happily.

Found this more by accident than design, wanted a change of pace and boy did this hit the spot!!! Loved the pace, story and characters. If you love Kaylea Cross you'll love this. Emmy Curtis has sexy, alpha, military, hot guys, strong, determined, independent, feminine heroines. Would have loved a full length novel, but as an opener, and change of topic, wow did it blow my reading socks off!!!

Really good read! Josh and Grace's chemistry was excellent and radiated off the page.

Josh is one hot PJ and Grace a refreshing female character.

Set in the Afghan terrain, it's a story of a hook up 3 years previous, Josh and his unit are sent into recue but things don't go to plan!

Discovering yourself and falling in love!

    Great read.
