Product Description
Product Description
The Lodge Cast Iron 5-Quart Dutch Oven is a multi-functional cookware that works wonders with slow-cooking recipes and all your favorite foods. The Dutch Oven holds a heap of chili, chicken and rice, or fruit cobbler. This model features a flat-bottom and sits on the stovetop burner or coven, with a domed lid that sends moisture back into the pot. Loop handles aid in carrying with oven mitts. Cast-iron retains heat well so you can sear meat at higher temperatures and will keep your delicious meals warm for a long time. Whether used in a kitchen or camp, theses virtually indestructible cookware should last for generations. Made of cast iron, this Dutch oven evenly distributes heat from the bottom through the sidewalls. Sporting a stylish black color, the cast iron Dutch oven looks good in most kitchens and it doubles up as an excellent source of nutritional iron. This pre-seasoned Dutch oven is ready-to-use right out of the box. While the cookware comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. The Lodge seasoning procedure is a multiple-step process in which the seasoning oil is applied via an electrostatic spray system that coats the cookware, then it’s baked in commercial ovens at very high temperatures. This allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the pores of the iron. This seasoning process achieves a seasoned finish that would take many months of home use to achieve. Sometimes during this process, the seasoning oil can collect and create a bubble or slight drip at the bottom of the pan as it’s hanging through the production process. And that in turn can turn brown as it’s processed through the seasoning ovens. This brown spot is not rust but in fact, carbonized seasoning and will darken with use. The factory seasoning process makes Lodge cast iron products ready to use right out of the box, and the product over time “Just keeps getting better”. After cooking, clean with a stiff nylon brush and hot water. Using soap is not recommended, and harsh detergents should never be used. Towel dry immediately and apply a light coating of oil to utensil while it is still warm. Cast Iron, like your grandmother used, still ranks as one of the best cooking utensils ever made. It gives you a nearly non-stick surface, without the possible harmful fumes generated by preheating chemically treated nonstick cookware. The American-based company, Lodge, has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. Measures 12.563”L x 10.375”W x 4.563”H (without lid) and 12.563”L x 10.438”W x 6”H (with lid).

The American-based company Lodge has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. No other metal is as long-lasting and works as well for spreading and retaining heat evenly during cooking. Lodge's line of cookware comes factory pre-seasoned with the company's vegetable oil formula, and is ready to use right out of the box.
This 5-quart Dutch oven holds a heap of chili, chicken and rice, or fruit cobbler. This model is not the campfire style, with legs, wire handle, and a lid for coals. This one is flat-bottomed to sit on a stovetop burner or in the oven, with a domed lid that sends moisture back into the pot. Loop handles aid in carrying with oven mitts. While the Dutch oven comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. After the meal is done, simply scrub the cast iron with a stiff brush and hot water, no soap, and dry immediately. Lodge covers the sturdy oven with a lifetime limited warranty against defects, and when cared for properly, this virtually indestructible pan should last for generations. --Ann Bieri

This one is pre-seasoned and made of cast iron. It cooks to perfection and the top cover can be used as a small frying pan. Food cooks evenly. It is very high quality, durable and very easy to clean. In addition, VERY affordable!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2008Size: 5 QuartStyle Name: Double DutchVerified PurchaseI have been cooking with Lodge cast iron for about 7 years and own 8 pieces from their inventory. The Double Dutch Oven is my favorite Lodge cookware due to its versatility.
When using a dutch oven, I usually sear the meat first to add flavor. Usually, this requires searing the meat in several batches. The best part about the Double Dutch is that you can sear the meat in the big pot and in the lid simultaneously, thus reducing the time needed to brown the meat by half. Since the lid is then used for the braising step (after deglazing), you're not increasing the number of items to be cleaned later.
I like the lid so much that I often use it by itself for pan frying. Due to the smallish size (about 10 inches in diameter) and the inherent properties of cast iron, the lid can get incredibly hot if you want it to. Perfect for cooking a steak (it puts on a better crust vs my 12" Lodge skillet). I've even used it as a pie pan in a pinch. When properly seasoned, the lid also works great for cooking eggs without them sticking. A seasoned cast iron pan is the original nonstick and will outlast any synthetic-coated nonstick pan in the market (and without the toxic fumes).
When used as a Dutch Oven, it works like it should. It retains heat well and cooks evenly. There is very little steam that escapes. The smaller 5qt capacity (vs a 7qt Dutch Oven, which I use less now that I've got this one) is also better for cooking moderate amounts of food. Generally, you want little empty space when using a Dutch oven.
In response to the reviewer who has problems getting the lid off, I suggest the following. When setting the lid on the pot, don't align the handles of the two. This will allow you to remove the lid easily, without having to worry about injuries. I've owned another Lodge 5qt Dutch Oven
with a more traditional handle - I don't miss that one at all...nor do I miss not having a standalone 10" skillet.
UPDATE (December 2010):
I've been using this thing for over two years now, several times per week. It is still my favorite, but ever more so. Here's one more thing that you can use this for: Baking super awesome bread that rivals anything you can get at your bakery. One of the secrets of making great rustic breads with a thick chewy/crunchy crust and great oven spring is to use a lot of steam for the first 10 minutes of baking. Bakeries use a steam-injected oven. For us at home, using a covered pot, such as this one, is the easiest way to replicate the effects of a steam oven. After shaping a boule, I place it on the lid, cover it with the main pot and let it proof (so the whole pot is upside down). When the dough is ready, I score it and place the covered pot on a preheated stone in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Then I remove the lid and let the top crust brown while the interior reaches the proper temperature. Depending on your oven, you might have to remove the bread from the lid halfway though cooking so the bottom doesn't burn - I usually put it on a cool baking tray on a rack without a stone. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's easier than trying to steam an oven with boiling water, ices cubes, mister, etc. And the results can't be beat!

The Lodge 5 Quart Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Double Dutch Oven JUST fits inside my countertop convection oven
Now I can cook bubbly smelly splashy stuff without having to clean the oven 👍
Used " upside down " it’s perfect for baking sourdough bread 😊 and the lid by itself is fantastic for skillet biscuits
Flat bottoms on both the base and the lid makes it usable for electric range cooking ( cringe ) and can also work beautifully on my charcoal grill. With properly seasoned cast iron, charcoal soot wipes right off with a damp cloth.
And Lodge is made in the USA 👍✅😎

I love cast iron and use my skillets constantly. So glad to add to my collection. Be aware that this is very heavy, especially when the lid is on! My mom would struggle with the weight so didn’t like it. However since I use cast iron often and saw a similar one in a store I knew what to expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Estupenda olla de hierro

5.0 out of 5 stars but anyways I love this stuff
Size: 5 QuartStyle Name: Double DutchVerified PurchaseIts very expensive here, one can get this for ~2500 in US ......but anyways I love this stuff.
My experience so far;
1. You need to wash it the same night, dry it and put some oil, else it will rust
2. Washing is preferred with hot water, you can use scrub but avoid detergent because that will destroy seasoning
3. Seasoning will build over time and will make this stuff better than any non stick you ever had
4. The top works as skillet and is most useful and used part, the superior heat retention cooks everything better, even a simple omelette will turn out great
5. Cooking point of view, use low heat as this stuff retains heat well and second is to time lifting the lid, specially mutton
6. It is very useful in Oven, there it is awesome
Hope it helps.....Thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy and functional pot - Great for bread baking
Size: 5 QuartStyle Name: Double DutchVerified PurchaseI bought this pot for principally for baking bread in. My first loaf has been a total success. I got a good oven spring and the bread came out of the pot very easily. It''s the perfect size for a round loaf. What I hadn't considered is how versatile it is. I've also used it for a slow cook curry which again worked very well. Cleaning it is easy, just soap and water. But the surface, although "seasoned" is slightly rough, so it took a little gentle scrubbing to removed baked in curry sauce (hence only 4 stars for Easy to Clean). You can tell that even with minimal care, it will last a lifetime. Only thing to consider, is that it is quite heavy, you really do need to hold it with both hands. So wouldn't be something to recommend for someone who is frail. But overall extremely pleased with it.

Product Description
--Ann Bieri
