(Midtown - WABC, September 21, 2006) (WABC) -- A new twist today, as police investigate a shooting in Midtown. They're still looking for three suspects. But now it looks like the victim may be in trouble, too. Investigators say she may have been involved in a bootleg operation, peddling fake handbags.
Eyewitness News' Toni Yates is live in Midtown with the latest.
Eyewitness News called police this morning and they said they still have no suspects. The victim, 42-year-old Wendy Ho is still in critical but stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.
Police say they believe the shooting was no random act, that the men probably knew the woman. She was pistol-whipped, robbed and shot.
The shooting took place just as rush hour was beginning.
Three men reportedly followed Ho from a store, to the 12th floor of her office at 34th Street and Broadway. They got her purse, $500 fresh from the bank and they nearly killed her. A gunshot went through her arm, through her chest, and out her back.
Witnesses say the heard the gunshots, others saw when the victim yelling near the elevator inside the building "45".
Witness: "She just was standing and bleeding in front of the elevator and screaming."
Witness: "She had been shot like three times. We were talking to her and telling her everything is fine, just hold on. She said I don't want to die."
Police combed the area looking for the gunmen with no luck, but later returned for an overnight raid on the counterfeit merchandise operation supplying high-fashion bags and footwear. They loaded up an entire van with high end counterfeit merchandise.
At noontime, it was apparent that the building where the shooting took place had stepped up security.
