Hamilton Police investigating an armed robbery want the public's help in establishing the robber's movements once he left the bank.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene said staff and customers of the Frankton branch of Kiwibank were confronted by a double-barrelled shotgun wielding gunman about 2.40pm.

"The man has demanded money from the female teller then made off on foot after placing his firearm in what appears to be a reusable green supermarket shopping bag.

"We've interviewed staff and customers of the bank overnight but we're now trying to work out how the offender got away once leaving the bank which is on the corner of Kent and Commerce Streets."

Mr Greene said investigators had established the offender had walked north on Kent St but after that the trail had run cold.

"We're very keen to hear from anyone who can shed light on his route from there," said Mr Greene.

The offender is described as a man of large solid build wearing a dark coloured beanie and black zip front jacket with a dark coloured hooded sweatshirt underneath with a black scarf obscuring the lower half of his face.

The man was also wearing dark sunglasses, blue jeans and light brown or tan shoes.

"We're hoping someone may recall seeing a person of this description carrying one of the distinctive shopping bags which would have had a long object (the firearm) inside."

Anyone with any information on the identity of the robber is asked to contact the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 8586200. Alternatively information can be left anonymously on the confidential crime line, 0800 Busthem (0800 287843).
