Suicide The Hard Way: And Other Tales From The Innerzone: A Macabre Thriller Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

A MACABRE THRILLER For Those Who Love POE, Clive BARKER, and The TWILIGHT ZONE.

"Christopher Alan Broadstone's work is always a highly crafted effort of dark art. I know he will take me places where I may not want to go, but I have to. Plain and simple: he is one of my favorite contemporary authors/filmmakers. His work haunts and is the stuff of nightmares." –– Terry M. West, author of "What Price Gory?" and "Dreg"

"Christopher Alan Broadstone’s short films are a dark, surreal exploration into the human psyche, evoking as much horror and fear in the viewer as contemplative thought." –– Michael Laimo, Bram Stoker Nominated author of "Deep In The Darkness" and "Dead Souls"

SUICIDE THE HARD WAY: And Other Tales From The Innerzone –– collects 7 never-before-released stories of the macabre from CHRISTOPHER ALAN BROADSTONE, horror filmmaker (3 DEAD GIRLS!) and novelist (PUZZLEMAN). Each tale lures us down twilight byways instinctively sped-through and discounted by most, but never explored. Within these stories, however, we become lost, meandering onto backstreets and alleyways –– stumbling through the grim reality of introspection that always leads to a terrifying, nihilistic, and often brutal look into the soul: the Innerzone.

Continuing this theme, SUICIDE THE HARD WAY also includes Broadstone's 3 screenplays for his award-winning short films, SCREAM FOR ME (Best Short Film: New York City Horror Film Festival), MY SKIN! (Best Horror Short Category: Shriekfest Film Festival [L.A.]), and HUMAN NO MORE (Best Horror Short: The Indie Gathering [O.H.]). These films, anthologized as the DVD 3 DEAD GIRLS! (available on Amazon), are explored in-depth by film critic MATTHEW SANDERSON in his original essay for this printing, titled: MADNESS AND MEANING. To bring even greater insight to Broadstone's filmmaking process, is the production diary kept by reviewer/filmmaker LEE BAILES, while working as Assistant Camera and BTS videographer on the set of HUMAN NO MORE. First published on the website THE RUMOUR MACHINE, it is now available here, titled: THE MAKING OF HNM: How An Englishman Spent His Summer In An L.A. Basement. (Active links to Film Music and Additional Film Info are also included in the Kindle version of this book.)

Completing SUICIDE THE HARD WAY is a section compiling 32 of Broadstone's previously unpublished dark, introspective lyrics and poetry, some if which are interpolated into his films, and many others of which are lyrics for music recorded and performed by his heavy grunge/rock band, THE JUDAS ENGINE. (Active links to Downloadable Music are also included in the Kindle version of this book.) SUICIDE THE HARD WAY: And Other Tales From The Innerzone is an ambitious work that chronicles all facets of Christopher Alan Broadstone's creative career: writer, poet/lyricist, musician, and filmmaker.

Christopher Alan Broadstone , still challenging good taste, bending his critics out of shape, and still creating ambitious works of philosophical horror. This volume demonstrates his world class talent in horror fiction with 7 short stories, filmmaking (3 screenplays of his short films) and music (his dark lyrics with links to music tracks online). Included also is film criticism by myself and insight into film production by Theonetrue Ginger (Lee Bailes) who worked on one of Chris' films. This book really has it all and is the official debut of Chris' cruel and obsessive tale, 'Roseblood'.

I've just spent the better part of two days writing up a review that does this book justice, and upon reading it back to myself, I realised my review basically included half the book! I usually review cosmetics, skin, and hair care products, so you will have to bear with me as I fumble my way through this.

There is a theme that runs through this book that really stood out to me, and that is how many of the main characters always look outwards to find what it is they are missing in life, when that very thing can only be found within. That is one of the most truest things of humanity. People always look to others in order to make sense of something, when the only person who can do that is you. Nobody else can do it for you. Nobody else can help you understand, and in many instances in this book is an absence of understanding.

I can't say any more without spoiling, but suffice to say you will understand when you read it.

This book is very well written, and to say it's thought provoking is an understatement. Christopher Alan Broadstone is a tale spinner through and through, and the tales he spins are just how I like them. Dark and disturbing, with a side order of psycho, and drizzled with crazy dressing! One of my favourites is Little Jimmy Combat, mainly because the scenario is something I have often wished would happen to those who constantly seek to destroy the planet on which we all live, but that is another rant for another day!

Suicide The Hard Way is the first book I've read from this author, but it certainly won't be the last, and fellow horror loving members of my family will be receiving this as a recommendation for sure.

“Kill ‘em all,” he thought. “Let God sort them out.”

Have you ever read something and then sat back and said “Hmm, what was that?” And so you go back and read it again. That’s how I felt when I first read Little Jimmy Combat. What an interesting and deceptively creepy story. Now of course I was eager to get on to the next story, Hellbound Hillary, again I am blown away! Another story that impresses! Wow, I eagerly read on and I am not disappointed. This is such a great collection of stories, well worth the time spent reading.

Besides the 2 short stories named above there is Smileys’ Grave, On Strike, Suicide the Hard Way, Scream for Me, and Roseblood. The stories alone are worth the price of admission, but then we are given a bonus; also included are 3 short screenplays and if this isn’t enough, lyrics and poetry. I think it is with the lyrics and poetry that you really get a sense of who Christopher the artist is. I am quite impressed by the versatility shown within these pages.

The stories aren’t going to make you jump or scream; no, they are much subtler than that. These are stories that will seep beneath your skin. Some may make you cringe or squirm, some may garner a twisted chuckle, but all will stay with you. I really do hope you pick up this book and enjoy it the way I did. Oh and I would like to give a nod to Danilo Montejo for the great cover art. He also did the cover of The Puzzleman, which I must say first attracted me to Christopher’s books!

Christopher Alan Broadstone, like his films in "3 Dad Girls" delivers a very intense and ominous style of horror in many of the tales in this work. Whether it be a sympathetic women plunging into ruination of addiction and self-mutilation, or a poor schmuck in bondage being dissected by a religious lunatic, there is nowhere this book won't go. Don't be alarmed, Mr. Broadstone gives us respite with a couple of more poetic or elegant tales. Woven in with the carnage are stories about an elegant seductress with nefarious intentions and a satire of a divine nature. Whatever level the stories in this work.....our author shines. These are stories that will stay with you and are delivered with an exclamation point. See my longer review on zisiemporium.blogspot.com
